Biked it several times. lots of hills mixed in with our flat terrain. Some pretty views to stop off and enjoy. During the summer though have run across quite a few snakes being that it buts up to a river. Usually have a good many riders on weekends. I suggest wearing a helmet made the mistake of not wearing one the first go round.

For biking I find it pretty boring. Nothing really technical (although some who don't venture much think it's super technical) and no drops or jumps to go crazy over. Comite offers a much more entertaining ride and you can get to it via a connection trail near the creek.

pretty sure this is what he was referring to.
Both entrances, the one at the BREC park in the back of the subdivision and the one on Hooper are the same trails to me.Just follow the creek, cross under the bridge and keep on keeping on.

surprisingly enough, a lot of people don't know that. It's pretty hard to find the comite extension if you don't know where to look. The hooper trails are marked horribly unless it's a race week.

It's tougher than you'd think because of how dense the trees are and how much the roots disrupt your momentum. The trails can get pretty damn narrow with sharp turns and you've got to have some decent speed to get over some of the roots. I've never really biked trails in other areas with harsher terrain, but this one's no cakewalk, to me. Once you do it a few times and know what to expect, you can have a pretty good time.

(This is in reference to the Comite side, fwiw)

It's great for running. Lots of flat areas with the occasional mud. The trail crew does a great job with drainage and building bridges over problem areas. Obviously it's going to be pretty muddy after rain but it drains pretty quickly from my experience. Comite is a different story.

You will find more bikers at Comite than hooper. I usually run into more runners than bikers at Hooper.

i can agree with that. Just that I've biked those trails for years now. Ohh and to the OP,Do not park your vehicle at the BREC park behind Cedar Glen subdivision.

I would always get nervous on the connector that runs along the river. It's so thick and overgrown that I know there are all kinds of snakes just inches away at any given moment.

I agree. If you are new to the sport, don't try to rush through because you will not enjoy it. Go through at a comfortable pace and pick out which lines to use through the root sections (do not go straight through them )

I was very fortunate to have gone with riders who were familiar with it my first couple of times. I would have hated it if not for them.

Yep. During the day there is usually a cop that stays there but after 4PM don't go anywhere near that park

The connection trail is always in bad shape but it's right next to teh creek so you're fighting both erosion and weed problems. It's gotten better over the last 3 or so years but it IS tricky sometimes and snakes are just a nature of the beast

Thanks for the info. Is it a good trail to bring a 9 year old on a hike?

Hooper is probably better for hiking. Comite gets lots of fast bike traffic. Less elevation change as well.

Comite is too cramped for hiking. Hooper is really flat and pretty boring IMO.

If you want good hiking, head up to Clark Creek. It's beautiful and very much unlike anything else around here.

+1

I prefer Comite over Hooper when I'm biking.

I run both Hooper and Comite all the time. Many times both at once. Comite is about 5 1/2 mile loop, Hooper is roughly 5. The connector trail between the two is a bit over a mile long. So you can get 13 miles if you run the "super loop."

Neither gets terribly muddy unless there is a lot of rain. They drain well. It's easier to run when it's muddy than to bike, since it's easy to avoid the mud spots.

There are weekly group runs on Wednesday nights at Comite. When the time changes in March, they will alternate between Hooper and Comite. Also do some longer weekend group runs out there.

What are the protocols for running on a MTB trail? I've anted to go run the trail in the spillway, but don't want to piss off any cyclists in doing so.

if you hear a bike coming just move off to the side. That's pretty much it. I usually see runners going to opposite direction as well.
