Making The Decision

Dupre has gone from a relative unknown as an underclassman to the top of the rankings at his position.

It’s even more impressive considering his high school, John Curtis Christian, is primarily a running team in a day and age when high school receivers are putting up monster statistics in spread offenses.

The sure-handed wide receiver, who runs a 4.58-laser-timed 40-yard dash, takes another route when looking at his rise.

Though his stat sheet pales in comparison to others, he understands the program he been a part of has helped shape him.

“The offseason preparation and mental toughness that we have to go through at Curtis definitely helps prepare me,” Dupre said. “College coaches, when they come through and talk to me, say Curtis practices are the closest thing to a college-level practice they have seen. ... I knew the talent I had, and it’s more than stats and catches.”

Dupre has also seen, as teammates got recruiting, just how to deal with the pressure-packed process.

“Seeing how their process went, and how they handled it has helped me," he said. “Friends that have done this before and friends that are already in college that I can trust in is the probably the best advice you can get. Somebody that has gone through it recently, and can tell me what to look at and look forward too is big.”

While LSU, Alabama, Florida State and UCLA are still in the running for Dupre’s services, there is pressure to stay in state.

And while Dupre has received advice from family and former teammates, the final decision will be his alone.

“Wherever Malachi goes, he will face adversity,” Mike Dupre said. “It’s very important for him to make that decision of where he wants to be, so when that adversity hits, he doesn’t want to immediately transfer or have a sense of negativity. If it’s the place he truly wants to be, then that will help him respond to the adversity that he will face.”

The words of wisdom from his parents will be a big part of Dupre being comfortable with his decision, which will be announced live on ESPNU during on national signing day on Feb. 5.

“When I sit down to make that decision, it will be my mom, dad and my brothers, Vernon and Matthew. It will come down to where I’m the most comfortable,” Dupre said.

hmmmm.

I took it as he's still contemplating going out West, but his Dad knows that if negative things start happening or adversity strikes, people's immediate reaction is to "head back to safer waters"... or back home.

That's one thing about kids going to an unfamiliar environment. Adversity away from home can really frick with your mind. I've been there, most people have.

It's great advice from his Dad.

Adversity

its called "home sickness" I have seen some very strong guys fold under it...but on the flip side i have seen some very meager guys thrive without sur-coming to it; but home sickness is truly a bitch to deal with...

It's a tough read, but it's really good advice. He's telling his son that if he does leave the state he better love it. He'll either pick LSU because he really wants to be a tiger, or he'll pick FSU/UCLA because that's truly where he wants to be. Rueben Randle was a great player but he never acted like he truly wanted to be here, and it showed on the field every now and then. So if Chi isn't going to be 100% tiger then I ain't gonna be mad at him for going where he'll give his best effort.

To be fair, having subpar QB play could have contributed to his actions.

I think you are closer to the truth. Not sure he's upset about much if he's a 1000 yard receiver.

That's a whole nother debate, but dad's quote in the OP is all about handling adversity. Sub-par QB play (and play-calling) is adversity. I don't know RR so I won't run my mouth about him any more than I have, but I want a guy that keeps his head up when the going gets tough. He's more likely to do that if he's in the place he really wants to be.

Randle had to catch passes from Jefferson/Lee. Neither of who helped him show his potential. But as for the way he acted, surely ur source on the matter is not his facial expressions because that guy had a stoned cold poker face. Actually his facial muscles may be paralyzed. Dupre has a much different scenario in front of him.

Probably headed to those "Hollywood Nights"....Westwood, Fast and Furious, etc...I mean, your home games in the Rose Bowl? When everybody back here east of the Rockies are either puttting up with Tornadoes, Hurricane's, Snow/Ice Storms, or just plain cold/heat/humidity, he is doing and hanging with the "Beach Blanket Bingo" crowd....High dollar sweeties out in Westwood....but I would rather hava a good ole southern girl anyday!!!
