I'm tv and gaming console illiterate. Just today got an hdmi cable to go from xbox to tv. What is the highest resolution the xbox will go? Or does it depend on the tv? I've looked at settings on the tv and can't find where to view the resolution but when I exit it shows "680x460 60Hz" (or something similar to that) in the corner.
TV is an Insignia that my parents got my son for Christmas, hence the reason I haven't messed around with it before now.

I think it can put out 1080p at times for most video and cut scenes, but actually gameplay probably 720p for the most part.

So do you not have to adjust anything as long as you have the hdmi cable hooked up? Will it automatically show the highest resolution?

im pretty sure theres a setting on the xbox to choose what resolution you want to use. just dont set it higher than your tv is capable of handling.
Settings > System > Console Settings > Display > HDTV Settings
Settings > System > Console Settings > Display > HDTV Settings
