Good Wifi Extender

Anyone have any good suggestions for a wifi extender. I rent an upstairs apartment that is just out of range and would like to purchase an extender instead of adding another internet line.

I resisted the temptation to post an empty reply...

Not-so-affordable: Cisco
Depending on the range you're hoping to expand, most of the "affordable" stuff will work for residential solutions.

Instead of a range extender which will reduce your speed by 50%, get a second router to use as a repeater

Powerline is always an option if you can use ethernet. If you use Powerline, you can hook up a router to the power line. All of this is on the Internet btw

You can use a second router as a repeater and extend your range.

I know how to do this, but can you explain it for everyone else?

It depends on if your second router supports wired or wireless repeating. I'll try to explain wired but it's been awhile so I might be wrong. If you have the ability to connect the two routers directly through ethernet cables, you can plug one end into an open port on your router that doesn't say WAN. There's probably going to be either 4 or 2. Plug the other end into the router that will repeat into the WAN or Internet port. You may have to change channels and tweak some dhcp settings but that's about all I can remember

There is firmware typically you can download for your router model.
Most allow you to log into the router and simply change to repeater. The key is getting the hard reset. If you google your model and add "as a repeater" it will show you step by step. It's a bit of a pain in the arse but it works.
