Not sure if this is true but I heard that when people die and use to die in Nola they wouldn't bury them in the ground. It had something to do with the fact that most of the city is below sea level and effected the graves that were dug. If the gravesites were effected by heavy flood waters, the graves and bodies would come to the surface. Because of this, most people are either cremated or were buried in mausoleums at St.Louis cemetery.

Is this still true? Are there other parts of Louisiana where they can't bury the dead? Other southern states?

Still true.

ETA: if you ever visit NO you will probably pass by a cemetery to see it for yourself.

No it's not true anymore, they've added enough dirt to bring the city up past sea level. Now they just lay dead bodies out beside I-10 and it's all good, and normal

The vast majority of people were "buried" on the mud flats out past Gentilly Ridge. After a few days, the tides would expose the bodies and it's said that the dogs would eat the bodies. Prior to the 1900s, only the rich were buried above ground.

All of the cemeteries you pass there. The graves are above ground, because when you dig you get water.

Partially correct: They are buried above ground, but because

there's always a long wait to bury them due to the need for an autopsy and investigation into their murder...

I heard they're switching policies.

Now they just ride around and push all the victims to the ditches, almost like snow plowing. Too many to keep up with collecting them.

saw em doing it last saturday morning.
