Eagle 98 has been playing the same shite for 20-30 years and calling it classic rock. At what age do you consider classic rock to start being oldies. Some if this shite is approaching the age of 60.

Should the genre be based in age or era?

I think the music industry fears the day they have to make a decision on this.

"Rock & roll" became "rock" in the late sixties -- that's always been a common dividing line.

You may have noticed you're hearing less music from the '50s as that audience dies off. I wonder how much '60s will still be played on the radio in 10-15 years?

I think it has more to do with how classic rock still influences and resembles much of today's rock. I grew up in the 70's when most of this stuff was new, and 50's/early 60's were already considered "oldies" because the sound had changed quite a bit.

There's really been only one notable change in American popular music in the last 40 years -- rap.

I've been waiting all my life for Latin music to have a big impact, but it never does.

The radio format of "classic rock" is from a certain era.

It's essentially "AOR" (Album--Oriented Rock) of the '70s under a different name

On the rare occasions that I've been forced to listen to 98.1 over the past year or so I've noticed that they have updated their playlist with more '90s/modern songs. I guess they finally figure out that they what they were playing was so stale it was hurting their ratings.

98.1 was playing some Blind Melon the other day when I was flipping channels

When was No Rain, like '94?

So I guess that's classic rock now, and since they don't play anything older than like REO Speedwagon and Toto, I guess that stuff is "oldies" now

All the fans of 50s and 60s stuff are dead or dying or going deaf, so they don't bother with that anymore

I routinely here 90s music on 98.1 these days. Anything from Nirvana to Pearl Jam to Creed

I hear newer stuff on Eagle as well, it's just when I hear the music from the 60s, I wonder how old does this stuff get before it becomes too old.

Personally, them playing stuff from back then is not a problem. My problem is it's been the same stuff forever. I listen to lots of rock from the '60s, but 98.1 doesn't play anything but the same regimented playlist as always.

Our local rock station plays mostly 90s rock during the day and current rock at night. Every now and then they will throw in some Guns n' Roses, Ozzie and what not.

I do think its kinda cool to hear nirvana on the classic rock stations these days. I've always wondered what they will be calling classic rock in about 30 years (other than the stuff from the 60s and 70s already played on those stations)

I was just listening to KLSU and they had and interesting mix of Bowie, ABB,ZZtop,Peter Gabriel and Canned Heat while I was tuned in.

DJ said these were requests. Who actually doesn't have a music collection and has to call in a radio station to hear a song they like?

Just asking.

Sort of. AOR was better because it had new stuff to play. They also played more deep cuts and B-sides and bands that never got big but had a hit or 2 for a while. Those types of bands disappeared with Classic Rock, its just the hits and the same hits from the biggest bands. AOR had a more expansive catalog to play.

So I guess that's classic rock now

98.1 has been "the Rock" station for a while now.

They play classic rock and modern day rock.
