It came up in the recruiting thread that Miles turned 60 in 2013. It is a marker - not necessarily a red flag. I am also taking a positive tone with this thread - for purposes of this discussion I'm assuming that things go well over the next 4 to 6 years.

Of course Miles' health appears pretty good right now. 60 isn't what is used to be. Paterno coached until 82 and Bowden 79, and I think more coaches will persevere into their 70s. Spurrier turns 69 in a few months and shows little signs of slowing down. The angry little man from WV is moving into his mid-60s.

Certainly 60 isn't "old" - but Miles does not come across as a guy who wants to do this until he dies - he obviously loves his job and the kids, but he's also a family man - even a modest projection has him LSU's all time winningest coach by the end of the 2018 season, and perhaps as early as the end of 2017. He has 28 wins at Okie State and if/when he passes Mac - his overall win total will be 166.

Does he soldier on to get to 200 wins? If so, this discussion in 4 or 5 years premature.

Does he hang it up the year after he passes Mac? If so, we need to start talking about it - not necessarily right now, but soon - and I mean months, not years.

Do we/should we get a HCIW in place prior to any official announcement - for staff and recruiting accountability/continuity? How far out should that be? 3 years, 4 years?

Is this just way too early/premature?

Should be offered to Cam Cameron if he wants it.

Yes, but it's food for thought. I think a coach in waiting is a great idea. I don't think Cam is the coach in waiting though especially since Miles probably has at least six more years in him.

If he leaves within 4 years and Chip Kelly wants to return to college, LSU should offer him everything he wants. What he is doing with the Eagles is really impressing me. The guy is as smart as they come but has no trouble communicating.

Could happen, would be a good choice.

The last BCS champion might encourage others to revisit it.

I've never been a fan of the formal HCIW - and we see its spotty success - however, once you get to the point of no return (like at PSU/FSU) isn't it prudent to plan for a smooth transition if that is possible?

Is the concern that it promises too much to the HCIW? Or that you foreclose the possibility of hiring the best person available at the time of the change - and are willing to sacrifice a single recruiting class for that option (which I suspect is the strongest argument against the HCIW)?

Miles will leave LSU when Lee Corso dies. He will then take his place on Gameday as the wacky guy.

Not trying to downplay the guy but why would you want him? Has he ever been a head coach at any level? I honestly don't know the answer to this but I would never want a guy to "cut his teeth" on a program of LSU's magnitude. That's just my .02.

Indiana and the Miami Dolphins.

He does not have a winning record as a head coach. I assume that will factor into your assessment.

The problem with the HCIW concept is that you need one of two things to pull it off successfully: a firm exit date for the old coach, or the HCIW willing to wait around on staff without a firm date. The former is obviously ideal, but rare. The latter limits the caliber of coach you're going to get, as a top-flight guy is going to have competing offers every year.

Only if he leaves LSU, goes to a BCS type school, proves he can recruit on his own, and has a highly successful run.

Gone are the days LSU hires a head coach with no record of success running a BCS program.

That'd be a grand slam hire, but won't happen. He might have another title or two with FSU before Miles hangs it up. Why leave

I hope Miles wins big so he will retire early and go out on a high note, and get out of B.R. Having my cake and eat it too.

Thedoc, I normally am a fan of your posts, but this one shows naiveté. Being a good offensive coordinator takes an entirely different skillset than head coach. Hiring Cam would be a crap shoot, and a school like LSU should not take wild gambles with football.

When the time comes we should take a proven college head football coach. No one else should be considered. Before you say, "Jimbo" I ask you to consider all the coordinators who bombed, too.

When? Let Les' contract expire in a few years. Do not grant an extension, no matter what. When a guy's getting old he could drop off a cliff at any time; I've seen it in my line of work. LSU should not get stuck with an expensive buyout.

1. Les will coach at least 6-8 more years at LSU then retire. He will be LSU greatest football HC by any measure.

2. LSU should try to hire some current (at that time) HC who can recruit and maintain a top program.
