Who: Vanderbilt Commodores @ LSU Tigers
When: Saturday, January 18th - 8:00PM
Where: PMAC (13,215 - 46th NCAA)
How: TV: ESPNU, Radio: 98.1FN, Stream: ESPN3.com

After going one and one on their two game road trip, LSU comes home to play a depleted Vanderbilt team on Saturday night on ESPNU. Vanderbilt beat Missouri Thursday night by three to claim their first SEC win. In the game, Vandy played three players the entire 40 minutes. They only played 7 players in the game. If there was ever a time for Coach Jones to pull out the press and try to speed the game up, this is it.

In their game with Missouri, Their 1-3 stayed on the floor for all 69 possessions. They combined for 12 of 28 three pointers and 13 of 15 free throws. LSU will have to do a better job on the perimeter trio. The rest of their team only scored 21 total points (Out of 78).

LSU needs to get their post players involved. Ole Miss was able to keep LSU out of the post using a 2-3 zone. Vanderbilt plays almost exclusively man to man so we will see if they make an adjustment to defend a post reliant LSU team.

Vanderbilt's depleted lineup stems from the loss of 6'11" Josh Henderson (torn ACL) and leading scorer Eric McClellan (dismissed from team). It has left an already thin roster in meager shape. Still, they defeated a good Missouri team Thursday night and can bring it from the perimeter similarly to Ole Miss.

LSU must execute their offense better in the half court or get after Vanderbilt who has been prone to turning it over in conference play. They are 12th in turnovers in conference games and have been one of the poorer rebounding teams thru the first 3 games.

Jordan Mickey and Johnny O'Bryant will be looking for redemption after a very poor performance by the two post players and their opportunities may be easier to find this game.

An even bigger question to be answered is how Coach Jones reacts to a team as thin as Vanderbilt. The Commodores tempo of 64.4 possessions per game is slow and LSU cannot let Vanderbilt slow this game down. LSU would rather reckless running to methodically efficient in this one just to ware out the perimeter guys.

The Tigers are desperate for a big win after such a letdown on the road and I hope the players react better than they did against Tennessee after a poor loss to URI.

Prediction:
LSU 75, Vanderbilt 62

When you look at the definition of must win, this game is there.

I expect this game to be a lot like the South Carolina game where we're up comfortably but nearly squander the lead late. This team sucks at closing.

You know what's sad South? There are very few fans that still believe in the season like you and I. I'm almost afraid of what the attendance will be like Saturday night. Playing a bad Vandy team after the Ole Miss loss and our last home game was a blow out...it literally scares me how bad the atmosphere will be. These are 18-21 year old kids who are 3 games into SEC play and most the fan base has already given up on them. Players read these boards and hear the things people say, and it absolutely crushes me since basketball is my favorite sport here.

I'll be there and I'm bringing as many people as I can to the game. I really hope the guys come out with energy and determination to get a little life back into the program

It is really tough to win on the road and LSU almost just went 2-0 on the road trip. Ole Miss isn't a bad team.

People are upset about the way we have closed out games - totally legitimate. We have been bad closing out games.

People have been upset about coaching - Honestly, yea there's some coaching things I have issues with.

People have been upset with the demeanor that JOB plays with - Totally legitimate. He looks like he doesn't want to play if he's not scoring a basket a minute.

Still, the team has a lot to play for. Im worried for the conference because noone wants to pull ahead besides Florida. This conference could get 1-3 teams into the tournament when we were hoping for 5 just a few weeks ago. But with Tennessee losing to A&M, Missouri choking and LSU playing like this... Shoot Kentucky could lose a few and we could be a 1 team conference which would be a monumental fail.

I agree completely. I mean, I'm disappointed at the recent stretch too, but there's no reason to give up completely. We also know how poorly LSU did at the start of SEC play last year and how much they improved at the end of the year.

hey, I want a little shoutout here too! I have been getting reamed for defending Jones. I am just astonished how quickly our fans have written him off.

I agree, it's not time to jump ship.
Unfortunately, expectations were simply too high (with good reason).

But, some of the pieces are still there. Those pieces just need to play better.
Also, CJJ needs to do a better job. I would say his coaching and JOB's play are the 2 biggest culprits this year so far.

Get over yourself LSUButt. Any reasonable fan knows that the last few tourney spots for the sec are wide open. Ask them who will go to the ncaa tourney besides lsu and they'll name uf and uk, but have no idea who else. Many fans are down right now, but you can't blame them. We blew that game wed. night by playing not to lose in the final 1:30. Winning our next 2 games will put us right around where need to be going into bama. I do hope that JOBIII comes off the bench saturday. That is one person that seems to not care and has really hurt this team on both ends with his lack of hustle. If he doesnt snap out of it this team will have trouble from here on out. Mickey, martin, coleman, stringer and hickey need to be the starters for now. Im pretty sure this team will go on a big run in sec play and get the excitement back before the season is over.

This actually seems like a decent line-up. It's unfortunate that JOB hasn't improved his play this season with better post players surrounding him. Not sure if there's a message to be sent or not by sitting him, but the team hasn't been significantly affected by his presence on way or the other the last few games. Hopefully he can adapt and become comfortable being the 1st-3rd scoring option on the floor because I agree that he hasn’t been effective when not scoring option #1. A little hustle on the boards would go a lon way with this team so hopefully JOB and others can pick up the defensive intensity until we find a better rhythm offensively.

I feel that the run will start Saturday. If you look at our schedule it sets up nice for a run for the next 5 games or so. I feel like these guys have to have some pride in them.

After Vandy LSU gets Mizzou at home who is talented but a team that has been VERY up and down. When they're on, they're tough. When they're not, you get last night. After that is a trip to Bama where even in LSU's recent good/great years has been a place where the Tigers simply do not play well. You follow that up with UK and Ark at home. We know about UK, and Ark is talented as well (though they generally struggle mightily on the road) Finally, LSU is at UGA (another generally tough spot for LSU) who has already shown they can win as an underdog in the SEC.

I wouldn't say the next 5 games set up for a nice run, as none of them will be games where LSU is a susbtantial favorite. However they are 5 games that will present this team with the opportunity to change the current perception of the team in a hurry. Run the table in the next 5-6 games and people will quickly forget the OM and UT losses.

Win against vandy and go 3-2 or 2-3 in the next five in my realistic opinion.

5-4 thru 9 sec games
