Little League coach sues player for $600,000 over injury suffered from helmet toss
Alan Beck is seeking $500,000 in pain and suffering, and an additional $100,000 in lost wages and medical bills, from the unnamed 14-year-old player whose helmet landed on Beck’s foot and tore his Achilles tendon.

After scoring the game-winning run, the unnamed 14-year-old defendant tossed his helmet in the air, only for it to land on Alan Beck’s foot and tearing his Achilles tendon.

Now the Roseville-based chiropractor is seeking $500,000 in pain and suffering, and an additional $100,000 in lost wages and medical bills, according to court records obtained NBC affiliate KCRA-TV of Sacramento.

"What the kid did, it crossed the line," Beck's attorney, Gene Goldman, told KCRA.

"He (Beck) is a good guy who was volunteering his time and now he's in a wheelchair. Who's the victim here?"

Joe Paris, the boy's father, said he thought the lawsuit "was a joke at first."

Paris isn't laughing any more after having to pay $4,000 in legal fees, not to mention additional court-related bills that are expected to go on for months.

That's his own fault, according to Beck's lawyer.

"If they owned a home, they should have had homeowner's insurance," which would theoretically cover the costs, Goldman said.

He'll easily win his case. Unless the defense can show he somehow encouraged players to throw their helmets off in celebration.

Though I doubt he'll get everything he's asking for.

I would think the lawsuit named everyone possibly connected to the incident and hoping to get a few dollars out of it. Obviously start with the kid but he (the lawyer) knows the money lies with the youth league (and their insurers), the BOD, the Umpires (for ruling it a homerun), the concessions for selling him the caffeine infested colas and on and on..

I want to know if the coach was in the designated coach's box. If he left the box before the game was called, he should be at fault.

Personally, I think this entire thing is fricking stupid and this guy should be ashamed of himself.

The victim is always at fault in righty land.

Meh. Help with paying hospital bills is about the only thing that should be asked for.

In the real world, everything has risks. The guy volunteered to coach because he wanted to (I would assume). Why is anyone at fault?

You can sue for as much as you want.

Doesn't mean you're going to win.

Completely wrong. This will settle for a couple thousand at most, no attorney in his right mind would take this case to trial. The whole incident will be judged on a reasonableness standard...is it reasonably foreseeable that a helmet, ball, bat, snow cone might hit you? Uh yeah it is, you assumed that risk by stepping into the field. The insurance defense attorneys are going to tee off on this guy if he is dumb enough to go into the courthouse.

Not sure of this guy's tear but non-surgical repair is pretty rare.

In fairness to the coach....that's a pretty serious injury and I think the league will settle for a lot of money.

In this ^^^ post, ignorance and wrongness are in the lead running neck and neck coming into the final stretch of the Moron Derby.

Let me see if I have this right..... A helmet created a torn Achilles tendon? A helmet fell onto a foot? Hmm? Pardon me, but.... isn't the Achilles tendon BEHIND the foot? How could a helmet fall onto the back of a person's foot?

Here's a post I did earlier in a thread that went off the rails.

LINK

Highlights:
quote:

The coach claimed the boy didn’t even score the winning run, and that the impact of the helmet on the back of his leg caused him to ‘go into shock.

‘I knew I went into shock because I lost my hearing and everything dimmed down,’ he continued.

Mr Beck coached 11 games after the alleged injury, and his lawyer admitted he knows baseball is a contact sport – which exposes him to a certain amount of risk.

quote:

‘[But] this kid crossed the line, he recklessly took some equipment and he didn’t care… and he violently threw it,’ Mr Goldsmith told HLN.

‘He definitely threw the helmet at me,’ Mr Beck added.

Also read that the parents don't have homeowners' insurance.

What a sleezebag to ask for 600k.

fricking Chiropractors. I always knew those guys were shady frickers. Just the type to file a frivolous law suit, someone with a fake doctor degree.

Probably. But if you're lawyer isn't asking for everything they think they could reasonably get from a jury at trial, you've got a crappy lawyer and should fire them. In any negotiation its always best to start out with an offer you think is more advantageous to you than fair. Otherwise you've got no ground to give!
