I'm 45 and I grew up playing soccer. My coach, to me was very good at helping to develop skills and such but that is pretty much the extent of my knowledge. I've only been following the European leagues for a few years but I hear so much about their developmental leagues and so I wondered if there is anything in the US that compares?

What do these developmental leagues do and when do kids enter these programs. Does the US have anything at all for developing young talent?

Most (all?) MLS teams have youth academies now.

This is a fairly recent (last 3-5 years) development.

LOL I get a blank page so either you're saying that we have no player development or your link is bad. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt because if you linked a blank page that's pretty damn funny :)

that are still light years behind

Watching German kids play they are so much more technical than their american counterparts or even HS players.

Academies that are three years old aren't as advanced as ones that have been around for decades?

That's an amazing revelation.

We get it, bro. The US sucks at soccer.

We won't see the benefit of these academies for at least a decade.

Jurgey better stay on top of this kid. Otherwise, he just may end up being Israel´s Messi.

TBF, the English aren't that great on the technical aspect of the game either.

Heh. A boy who played with mine, never saw the pitch except in cleanup time after blowouts, was there for year on exchange. He was the Messi of that school.

Seriously, he was like a demigod there, photos with the team, the manager, tons of limeyettes. It was very funny.

Yeah it's great that the MLS has their own academies now. Yes they are not as good as those in Europe but they don't have the history and money that the Euro clubs have. I think 10 years from now we will see a difference in homegrown talent. This is the better way to go than going through the college system.

if they can somehow finnagle the two to be complementary, that would be great. I´d LOVE to see a buoyant NCAA program.

Well I think we still have a place for the college game in this country. Lots of areas where the MLS isn't present and I don't know if youth systems are in place at the lower tier clubs. I know the Cosmos have their own academy set up though. Then some guys also fall under the radar and get discovered later.

The Union academy hasn't produced a world class player yet? Might as well shut it down.

Disregard that half the staff probably hasn't even figured out how the copier works yet.

What teams don't have them?

I feel like, at this point, Garber should require all teams to have them.

I don't know. I think all teams have them - but I'm not 100% certain.

An interesting thought, have any idea how that would happen?

College (and High School for that matter) soccer would essentially be for players that did not get their youth contracts renewed or never received a youth contract.

MLS already has it set up pretty well. They allow teams to sign their (former) academy players to home grown player contracts even if they are playing in college.

I think that it's a pretty decent base for a mutually beneficial relationship.
