5th Grader Reading Skills....Does LSU have this issue?

I apologize if german.
I am not sure how many of you guys heard this news story going around about this research that was conducted at UNC that found that almost 7%-18% of basketball, football students in many universities have reading skills below 5th Grade Level.
What %age of LSU student athletes do y'all think have similar issues?

People that wouldn't have a chance to go to college get to go thanks to athletics. I don't see why this is an issue. Instead of praising the system the elitist snobs want to tear it down.

I would agree with your response if the system was set up that way. On one hand college athletic programs want best athletes at any cost, who we very well know are attending college in hopes of making it to NFL, but on the other hand NCAA wants to impose these class attendance restrictions, min GPA requirements, etc.
Its hypocrisy across the board.

It wouldn't surprise me. Hearing JC Copeland talk in class made it seem like 5th grade reading level would be generous. One of my high school teammates got a scholarship to a smaller school with a 15 on the ACT so it's not just a big school issue

By no means am I saying that LSU does not have student athletes that are clearly poor students; I'm sure there are more than a few that fit the criteria you're discussing. That being said, LSU does seem to fare well compared to most of the conference with regards to graduation rates.
For 2011 and 2012, LSU was 2nd only to Vanderbilt in the graduation rates... and there's no shame in finishing 2nd to Vanderbilt in this regard.

I'm not looking very hard, but don't see that they're still 2nd place in 2013 (not sure if the numbers aren't available yet or if LSU dropped... if they did drop it's probably all the early departures to the NFL.
). But I did see this article, saying graduation rates are continuing to climb:

Again, not saying LSU doesn't have some poor student athletes that have trouble staying eligible or wouldn't be eligible without all of the academic assistance available to them, but at least it seems LSU does make an effort to help ensure the academic success of their athletes. What these stats mean in the greater scheme is debatable, but it's a pleasant bit of news in any case.

I was in an English class with a football player who when asked to read for the class, looked at the book and kept shaking his head until the teacher told him we'd come back to him.

you gotta be kidding. so we should have a university that has students that have no entrance requirements and no academic requirements, not even having to go to class.
what has this world come to. i just hope none of these college pro's get their degree.

Not everyone belongs in college. Just like not everyone belongs playing college football. You think the football team would allow 7-18% of their team to be made up of people who weren't any good, and had no business being there, but were really good at chemistry?

I've had classes with a lot of athletes. 5th grade reading skills would be a huge surprise in many cases. But most of them sit there with headphones or glued to their cell phone so it's difficult to know if they actually comprehend what's going on in the class.

Won't make excuses for them, because they could have applied themsevles in public schools, or in some cases, private schools, but still, that player was probably embarrassed.
I do not see a problem with letting them in. It is giving some of them exposure to more education which could help, or if anythin, provides a venue for "job training" to get to the NFL.
Also, a college professor going around the room for readers like an elementary school professor is a joke.

an even higher percentage of rantards have similar issues.
this is nothing new...back in the day, many athletes took the appropriately called "basket weaving" course load. academians gonna' be academians....jocks gonna' be jocks. only difference, jocks risk their bodies and make millions for the school while some academians sit back and point fingers. seaux it geaux's.

Legally speaking, they can't. At least not by name. But they could easily supply anonymous test scores for athletes.
They have the records, they just don't want to make them public.
