Though they saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Seahawks, New Orleans did at least get the best performance so far from their expected left tackle of the future, Terron Armstead (+4.4).

the kid has so much upside - nice to see him getting so acclimated to the game in such a short period of time. the fact he chose to have his best game int he playoffs at the toughest place to play, against that defense has me stoked for this kids future in Black and Gold.

Having a LT not be a liability will also improve Grubbs' game, since he won't be trying to help out both the LT and the Center.
Hopefully next season the LT is solidified, and Evans is at 100%. The line improved as the season went on, they got acclimated with their new system and coaching, and Evans' injury healed up.
Now it's just time to get a new Center right?

PLEASE.
For a few years people considered DLP average or above average. It was clearly shown that our guards covered his arse more than not and when our best guard went down, this line fell apart in the middle.

Armstead is both exciting and scary for me. Exciting cuz he did look so good. In the Seattle game I noticed him swaying with the music between plays a couple of times- like he was relaxed and confident. And he was. The scary part is if you do lay the LT spot on a guy with 4 starts under his belt.
Brown might eventually get there. He didn't look overwhelmed when he played some RT either, so that's possible too.
Kudos to Loomis, Reiprish & staff for what looks like a major score at a vital position using a #64 & #75 picks!

The guy is not bad at all. Notice that once Armstead became adjusted to the game the offensive line looked a hell of a lot better. Look at what the running game was able to do the last few weeks.
I might be in the minority, but center is not my main concern, or even close.

I think Lelito is the future center.

you're a minority
We all know, lines work as a unit, one weak point and we're gonna have issues. If the tackles play well and can handle their 1v1s, the guards and center can handle 3v2. But if the tackles don't play well, that means the guard has to help, and that leaves the inside 1v1. I know its making this sound extremely basic way of 'blocking', but if you could improve at the center position (not having to use a 1st or 2nd rounder) wouldn't you?
I mean with the first 2 picks, we could go receiver/DB and shore up 2 of our biggest deficiencies.
On the defensive side, we get butler back, so OLB should be shored up. If we can sign Parys to a 2 year deal, we're looking pretty deep with haralson, galette, and butler. ILB we are stuck with lofton/hawthorne so we could always throw a late round for ILB. our dline are still young so that isn't a priority. Only thing we're missing is DB (this season definitely tested our depth). We lost greer, prob, and Vaccaro...arguably 3 of our 4 best DBs. We'll get vaccaro back, but we're looking at losing greer to retirement, prob is no better than a #3 so resigning him isn't a bad idea, harper due to salary cap issues, and jenkins potentially leaving in FA.
Biggest Need imo: DB
On the offensive end, we need to get younger at the receiving corp for sure, we have jimmy [assuming tag/signed], hill, and watson at the TE position. No need for RB or QB yet imo. The line can be improved, 37 sacks is way too much.
biggest need imo: WR and then center
I mean where else do we go? lol

I don't have the precise prescription but one illness has to be turned around...
Brees sacks from 2006- 18, 16, 13, 20, 25, 24, 26, 37
We saw a similar poor trend of sacks going down on defense until this year. When that turned around you see how much the D did too. I propose getting Brees back to a minimum of 25 sacks for the offense to step back to the level we are accustomed to. Sub 20 sacks and you will see that next level of Wow! offense.

I agree with this assessment. It's not fair to judge anyone on the line when one guy (Brown) in particular is struggling. It affects everyones job since the line has to operate as a unit. I think our line looked much improved starting with Armsteads second start.

Do we have a stat on how many sacks Brown allowed? PFF grade?
I think Brown allowed 7+ or so himself. He was by far the weakest link. DLP was/is at least serviceable. Evans also wasn't 100% this season.
If the C position is upgraded I am fine with that, but there are needs I would put before center. If DLP returns and is a starter, I am fine with that.

C position is a major need. Grubbs and Evans looked like they had bad years because LT and C positions were getting beat so bad. In the games where our LT played well, Seatle for example, the Guards were able to help DLP without having to worry about the outside rush. DLP is a below average center that plays up because of the talent around him. If we can get a C in the 2nd or 3rd, I would be happy.

but at what price? He is an UFA. I think any of the top 3 centers in the draft could be an upgrade. Ya can get one of them at #58 fo sho. Would be cheaper and younger than dlP.

i think we gotta look. DLP was decent at times, but flat poor at times and often needed help.
Here's some of my loose grades based on beer-induced memory haze:
Evans A (when healthy of course)
Armstead B+ (only based on two games)
Streif B-
Grubbs B-
DLP C+
or
DLP < Grubbs < Strief < Armstead < Evans
we can solve this by bringing in two more guys to compete for the bottom 3 spots with Lelito. Some combination of draft and FA.
Start the best 5 come September.
Win tha ship. easy peasy

I don't know if I put Armstead that high based on 4 games (or 2, but he played 4).
Grubbs will be better with Armstead.
DLP will be better with a better Grubbs.
I think you see the pattern.
If both DLP and Strief could be resigned to cap friendly contracts. There is no reason to not keep this unit together. However, with both being unrestricted, one of them will get out bid for. I do think DLP is the easier to replace. Can Lelito play C? that would be nice.

DLP has to go. Strief is a keeper if the price is right. If Armstead is legit, the line would be miles better with the right center (and Payton making a full commitment to the running game).
