I have to wear a head light at Ruth's Chris. The lighting in there is terrible. Wife always wants to go to Ruth's but I can't enjoy a $200 meal under dim conditions by candle light.

Parrain's is almost as bad the last few times I've been.

Boutin's is not terrible. It is just average with better alternatives in town. I take out of town friends there for the music, and the food is ok. Parrain's is much better.

The direction this thread has taken is indicative of the OT bleadover effect on this board, a FOOD board. The real direction should be more along the line of a discussion of why a city (Capital City and 2nd largest population in the state) only an hour down the road from Lafayette has only Parrains to claim as a fairly passable Cajun restaurant to show for itself. Well, that and the Boutins thingy. That's embarrassing.

Donald Link should have opened that second Cochon in BR and not in Laffy.

I guarantee you if someone created a national chain of Cajun restaurants, there would be five in the greater Baton Rouge area.

Also, don't eat at Boutin's. Friends don't let friends eat at Boutin's. I AM a Cajun and I can promise you that the shite they serve there is not good Cajun food. Put all the pieces together, and you'll see that place is just a tourist trap. Store in the restaurant? Check. Dance floor? Check. Band playing bad Cajun music? Check. Not actually IN Cajun country, but has those "authentic" things? Check.

Parrain's is passable, but it's not great. Also, remember that Cajun food is rough and rural. Personally, I think it just doesn't ever translate well from the home to the restaurant, even in the heart of Acadiana. Once you try to make it pretty or use different or better ingredients, I think it loses the character that makes the cuisine what it is. But, that's just my opinion.

Thank you!

I'm not a cajun, but I know enough to know that Parrain's isn't all that.
