I remember the refs threatening to have my sisters 8th grade basketball team forfeit the game if our fans didn't stop complaining about the calls being made.

8th grade girls' basketball being taken THAT seriously by fans, i'm guessing mostly parents.

I know the officials of this game tried to eject the sportwriter just because he was sitting in that section. I can't wait to hear the whole story.

What kind of ref gets that sensitive at his calls? All refs are criticized for their calls at some point. I guess in a middle school gym the guy could hear every single individual critique (to put it nicely) but still.

my knee jerk reaction is to side with the ref or the umpire in sports situations. Fans tend to be out of control and irrational and refs/umps seldom have an intent to make bad calls.

Part of the sports experience is supposed to be about becoming less of a child - unfortunately many parents (esp the crazy ones yelling from bleachers) are terrible role models in this respect

Ponchy vs New Iberia in baseball 2011, the game was played without fans after the 2nd inning because the umps threw EVERYONE out. Both teams. Thats how bad they were.

The first of the ejections happened following a foul on Haynes player Haley Gonzales. Fans from the Haynes side of the gymnasium began arguing the call with officials when without warning or any other physical incident, a referee ejected the entire section.

Bonura was given two technical fouls over a matter of seconds when he attempted to question a call. The second series of events led to Bonura being escorted out of the gymnasium by Scott Sanders while yelling at the officials.

Minutes later, Jones and Gonzales were aggressively fighting for the ball and each drew a technical foul and an ejection from their respective teams. Both will now be unavailable for their team's next games.

Over officious jerks

I try to go to the games at my kids' school just to yell at the refs. The level of competence in high school officiating is so bad, you just have to do it. At a game right before Christmas, I yelled at a ref who missed a call right in front of me, and he stopped, turned to me and started explaining why he did not call it. I yelled back that he should be watching the game, not explaining himself.

whoa, didn't know about that incident - I try to keep up with the Greenies via the Daily Star and Actionnews17 - did this take place at the Greenie diamond or in New Iberia.

if you'd told me this happened without naming a school, haynes wouldn't have been in my first 50 choices

if you'd told me this happened without naming a city or referees association, thibodaux would have been my first choice

I've reffed eighth grade girls basketball before. It's pretty brutal usually. I'm talking about the talent/skill on the floor. I can drown out/ignore any parent easily most of the time.

Actually happened at Zachary in a tourny. Nothing really happned to cause a scene. Just grumpy umps made a bad call both ways, a couple fans get on them. Everyone gone

A new official learning how to do the job and one who makes a lot of mistakes in the process.

Everybody starts somewhere and that's who calls 8th grade games.

If folks don't want newbs calling games, the shortage of officials gets worse, then parents and/or fans from the stands can officiate the games. Good luck with that....
