Taking the family to Banff in may, booked it without any research whatsoever. We have never been to Canada. We are driving because we want to see Montana. Will we have any trouble getting over the borders, there or back? Are there any unusual laws to be aware of? Thanks for any info

You have to have a passport or a passport card.

We last went in 2007 and none of us had passports and we were let in but warned that the laws had changed and that any crossing would require passports/

It used to be so simple.

"Do you have any fruits or vegetables? Do you have any guns or ammunition? move on through"

You're driving to Banff from Alabama so you can see Montana?

You know there is a lot of boring shite between Alabama and Montana and even more between Montana and Alberta right?

"As a general rule, Canada does not allow persons with DUI's to enter their country, although travellers who require in-depth information regarding the process of applying for a waiver or other admissibility questions can reach the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (08:00 - 16:00 local time, except holidays) by calling either (506)636-5064 or (204)983-3500."

So how good are you at driving on ice and snow? You aren't entirely safe from either until around June or July.

This. It only takes a couple weeks to get them passports. Makes life easier. It would be a real shame to drive that far only to get turned around because of some small technicality. The Canucks can get pissy at times.

If it does, he should hope it ends before Kansas.

Currently in Canada.. Made the drive to Calgary from Louisiana back in September.

Not sure what that other guy was talking about, but if you start on I-20W the only boring parts of the drive were NE Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.. Colorado to the boarder had decent scenery. The border to Banff in only 4 hours or so and you have the mountains to your west almost the entire route... You should definitely all have passports.

The border crossing in Montana to Alberta will probably only have 1 lane open, but its a breeze getting in, shouldn't have to wait very long. Expect severe winds between the boarder until you get close to Calgary, its just a thing in that area.

The wife and I spent Xmas in Banff, AWESOME views there, but unless you're skiing and whatnot, it'll get boring after a few days. I definitely suggest taking a day to travel the Icefield Parkway from Banff to Jasper. Most scenic drive ever!

Just drove back to LA from Vancouer Island, winter driving sucks across the NW, even in relatively clear weather. 40 mph winds in Wyoming were not fun, blowing snow into white out conditions. I honestly would highly recommend flying.

If you do drive, no radar detectors are allowed and no pepper spray.

OP should just get the cards if they're never going to fly anywhere. Cheaper for him

Passport Card

If you have a DUI within 10 years and are not a rehabilitated felon. Turn around, it's Federal in Canada. I couldn't schedule fuel stops in Canada because copilot had one five years ago.
