Watched a documentary on Death the other night and I highly recommend it. About 3 brothers from Detroit who started a band called "Death". They were doing punk before anyone else it seems.
Youtube Vid
Documentary is a little slow in the middle but picks up once they start into how Death was rediscovered by Jello Biafra. Kind of reminds me of the Saving Sugarman story.

MC5 was out in 1969, but yeah... I've heard of this doc and want to see it. Detroit really is the birthplace of punk (MC5, the Stooges) and you can see the influence of garage rock on the scene with the famed Nuggets compilation.

could be argued as england being the genesis..
FYI: I just got a doc called "it came from detroit" and it's AWESOME... discusses the detroit rock scene from the 80's to now

From the bits I've seen, Wayne Kramer of MC5 is in the documentary.

It could be... but you'd have to explain how the Ramones tour of England didn't inspire bands that didn't exist yet to form. And that the Ramones came a good 5 or 6 years after the Detroit scene.
Or that the first use of the word "Punk" in regards to music was Punk Magazine, from NYC.
Besides, isn't it more perfect for a music that aggressive to come from Detroit?

Coincidentally enough, one of the first true death metal bands was also called Death.

So if you think about it... Death is really the beginning.. not the end.
Hmmm

This song is amazing. Put the doc in my Netflix queue.

A movement-not a type of music. I know many disagree.

I agree. "Punk" isn't necessarily a genre but more of an idea, movement, or attitude.

I saw this a while back and I thought it was obviously pretty cool, however I didnt find the music all that great... But thats OK! Just my 2 cents..

Funny you mentioned this. I almost added it to my queue this morning. When I think black punk bands I think Bad Brains.
