Saw this on my newsfeed this evening:

Friend of mine went to Acme for a family event. She asked about the catfish poboy and wondered what kind of fish they used. The waiter replied "we don't use actual catfish. But, swai. It taste exactly like catfish"

I'm curious if any of you knew about this as well? and is this the norm?

That's weird. I've eaten swai a few times and didn't mind it at all. I don't know how the hell Acme can get away with that.

Swai? I thought places were still selling basa as catfish. I must be behind the times.

Basa and Swai are both about the same. Farm raised in Vietnam.

And Acme doesn't say it's a catfish po boy. Just says fish po boy, fish platter etc...

Pretty bad farm raised. I'm a Des Allmands and Amite River catfish snob but I will say the delta farm raised catfish is much better now. Light years from 30 years ago when they started. The feed and the filtration used now is much better. I'll eat MS farm raised catfish without a problem.

Asian fish are coming from some of the most polluted waters in the world. I wouldn't knowingly eat it.

That is correct. I've linked this several times but it's a good read on Chinese acquaculture. LINK

What gets me is how cheap real catfish is to begin with, what about $4/lb retail knowing they get it cheaper, and that maybe a1/4-1/3 lb on an overstuffed Poboy? How much money could they be saving? I can almost understand and expect the Asian run gas station that sells Poboys to use that shite but places like ACME?

Even Piccadilly had good fried catfish till they switched to that crap and now serve "southern style fried fish"

Is it legal to sell one meat as another? I mean she discolosed the fact, but he had to ask.

No but a quick glance at the online menu says fried fish Poboy, no mention of catfish anywhere on the menu

Well for a restaurant that claims to only use LA seafood. Its pretty shite for the waitor to say they are using swai instead.
