Decent Squirrel Hunt Yesterday w/ Dogs

Hey guys,
Now that AR modern gun hunting season's over, it's time for one of my favorite hunting activities….squirrel hunting w/ dogs. One of my friends and I went yesterday w/ my hunting buddy and his two dogs. It was only the second hunt of the year for the dogs so they were rusty. In addition, my buddy's main dog is now 13 years old; she's obviously lost a bunch of steps since last year. As usual, we carried an assortment of guns: semi-auto 22LR, bolt action 17 HMR and semi-auto 16 gague. I usually carry a rimfire rifle or pistol, but yesterday I carried the shotgun and "cleaned up." The rifle guys did a good job so I didn't have much to clean up We ended up w/ 8 squirrels. Not a great hunt, but a good start for the season.
Yesterday also gave me a chance to try out the "Havalon" knife for cleaning squirrels. I was given one Christmas '12 and used it on a few deer this year. I found out yesterday I like it better for squirrels than deer. The scalpel blade handled all aspects of cleaning the squirrels quite well. Unlike typical pocket knives that have a closed spine, the "Havalon's" spine is open so that it cleans up easily.

For sure! While I really like the 17 Mach 2 for squirrel hunting, I think the 17 HMR is too destructive. I've heard the HMR's not as destructive when using FMJ bullets, but I've not been able to find any to give it a try.

I went hunting behind my camp with my 17 hmr. Gotta use FMJ. They jack em still but not too bad.

The Havalon's good for skinning deer, as long as that's all it's being used for. All the deer I killed this year were bullets that I'd never used before. Consequently, I opened the chests on the deer to see just how the bullets performed. The Havalon does NOT work for opening up the chest. (Yep, I tried….
) For the hunter who just skins or cuts meat, it works fine. The blades are easily removed/replaced and are inexpensive (IIRC, about $0.50 apiece).

Good lord! What's the pic with the ballistic damage to the carcass? I guess that's a deer? What did you shoot it with? A drone?

It looks like it'd be too thin/light for that. I like a big meat cleaver looking bastard for that.

I just decided at about 330 yesterday to go behind the camp and shoot some. Had 3 In the freezer from ealier in the year. Shot 3 more in about 20 minutes. Cleaned them and made some pot roasted squirrel and gravy along with some black eyed peas cooked down with deer sausage.

I got a BMC pup 5 months old that will be in the woods every evening in about 2 weeks when I get home. I put out corn behind my house and have been taking him out and letting him smell around. He's not too sure what he is looking for yet but hunts pretty good. I got to trap one and get him excited. I also have a friend that has Mountain Curs and will go a few evenings with him.

LOL! That may be the one that got causght in some vines on the way down. I tried to shoot just the offending vines w/ the shotgun, but a FEW pellets may have hit the squirrel, as well.
