My cousin-in-law began suffering from Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura over a year ago and the treatment costs (plasma replacement) was costing over $4500 each time. Anywho.. her insurance (shes 31 now) never covered it. Thankfully her uncle is pretty well off and has paid for all of her treatments. However she found out last week that her new insurance plan through BCBS of Alabama which did go up over $300 a month will now cover 95% of the treatments. So Im sorry, I guess it is true as into the reason why medical costs have zoomed upwards..the insurance plans are now covering every damn thing they didnt cover before as stated by new federal guidelines. Also she can now get a spleen transplant from a relative (in her case she needs to have a spleen whereas most people can lose em and no major problems) as it too is covered whereas it wasnt before.

That's how they get you in. I'm sure the sick are going to be covered for everything, right now, imagine the negative stories if they weren't. Eventually they will have to ration, its just a matter of time. Glad to see her get some help, just don't see the stories lasting long, as someone has to pay, and these insurance companies are fixing to get soaked, its coming....

I think everyone is happy that people will get coverage and treatment they need. Those of us who aren't fans wonder how that treatment will happen when that many people who need treatment are added (with no new doctors added) and how it will all be paid for.

well here is the thing.. we are all going to go through hell in 2015 when almost all company paid plans are dropped and everyone has to go through the exchanges. However that being the case, by then, EVERYONE will be covered BUT everyone will be paying SOMETHING into the system, so common sense would dictate everyone will be in the system so costs should come down...HOWEVER, that being the case, companies which have been pushing healthier lifestyle changes to keep employees healthier and save money on better productivity and less medical costs then lose that incentive so your back to square one in that regard.

First that's great news for your in-law.
TTP will usually resolve, but may recur.
It is exactly the situation the no-preexisting-condition policies were meant to address.

Two things:
(1) For the vast number of patients, the new policies will restrict coverage and access rather than extending it. Ref. to Specialist restrictions, Renowned Medical Center restrictions, increased wait times, services covered but with no actual availability due to the small # of MD's, facilities etc. on the plan.
(2) $4500 oop seems steep for your in-law, but $300/m + higher annual deductibles equate at least to one $4.5K treatment by itself. Hopefully her TTP sxsx will improve over time. If they do, that built in $4.5K/yr insurance cost increase will seem steeper and steeper.

I am sorry I can never approve of single market/single payer institutionalized healthcare.

Americans are the ultimate individualists. Healthcare is the ultimate individual need.
We should be protecting these truths through our system.

Collectivism is a scary concept. At its core it is bullying, it is as an individual telling you that they can use the power of government, capital, regulation, or plain old violence to force you into collusion with them in which the entire premise of a market transaction is aborted to give them an unfair advantage.

Collectivism of any type is the ultimate perversion of the Human Spirit. It is pillage of your most private capital - your thoughts talents abilities and labor. And the ultimate transgression against human liberty.

Getting something paid for that you already know exists isn't insurance.

Insurance is protection against unforeseen bad events.

It's nice for your family individually in this case but you are being subsidized by force by everyone else in that pool. There isn't enough money and medical resources to do that for everybody. Planning by anecdote isn't going to work.

This is what obamacare is supposed to do. When EVERYONE has insurance and pays something into the pot we all get affordable health care that covers more.

Whether we pay through premiums or taxes (medicare, medicaid) we will have a better health care system.

By 2016 it will be working enough for enough people and the GOP will have to live with it.

We all knew the government would pick winners and losers.
Your cousin was on the fortunate side, but as stated in this thread, this is not insurance.

Sorry to hear about your cousin-in-law, but her needing something doesn't justify using the power of the government to take it from me.

There will be good stories to come out of Obamacare, but it will hurt 99% of people to benefit the other 1%. And your comment about EVERYONE paying into the system is far from true. Medicaid has been greatly expanded under Obama. Additionally, fines for not having insurance will be waved for people under a certain income level. In other words the vast majority of people already not paying for insurance will continue to not pay for it. Probably a lot more not paying considering the jobs situation since Obama has been elected.
