Can you transfer stuff from a Cox DVR to a computer?

I have a Motorola DVR and am looking to transfer football games to my Macbook Pro to free up some DVR room. I checked the back of the DVR and don't see a firewire port. Any way to do this?

I'd love to see a reply, but I don't think it's possible.

Yes. Transfer to a camcorder of some type and then use FireWire to transfer to CPU. I have the Super Bowl on my home, laptop and iPad that way.

For the second time, you have failed to include the model of dvr. So I'll respond this time with 'magic beans'.

I know they have screen capture devices that people use to capture video games and stuff. Not sure exactly how it works but maybe you can look into it.

You could conceivably get up to 720p out of some of these. Hard to say which one he should use, though. He doesn't list the outputs that his box has. If HDMI, Hauppauge HD pvr 2 is an easy option.

The link shows FireWire, USB, esata, and rj45 (Ethernet) connectors (these chosen because there is potential that each could be used for your designed purpose). Which of these are actually physically present? Refer to page 13 for any connector you aren't familiar with along with it's claimed location.

It's very possible they don't let you do it without an intermediary device (sadly, the good ones cost in the $50-100 range, last I checked)

No. You will have to buy a special accessory that plug into your DVr and connects to your computer via USB. The USB on the Motorola boxes doesn't work/allow for that type of transfer.

If either it or the esata port allow for external HDD connection, his issue will be solved without the need for an extra device as an intermediary.

From what I understand, if you have a Linux machine, you can remove the hard drive from the DVR and hook it up as a secondary drive to the computer and transfer them that way.

Actually they will record in 1080p now.

You can get a PVR for either HDMI or Component so no issues there.

You can make a Ubuntu USB boot drive and do it that way. No need for a separate machine.

I did this to get info from a dying drive I had that Windows wouldn't access anymore.

More about it

Hauppauge makes a couple that do 1080i. Several other companies do as well. I've never seen a 1080p. Happen to know at least the name of company that makes one with that high of a resolution?

Eta- hdpvr2 seems to have 1080p resolution. I assumed it was an encased Colossus which was incorrect.

I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to this stuff. Can I go to best buy, get a cable, plug it into the MacBook Pro and record?

Can I just do like the one guy said and save it on a card on my camcorder?

I would use a Hauppauge HD pvr2 if i wanted to record HD files. If I wanted just sd, I would google 'USB video capture' and buy the cheapest dongle.

But again, if you have an esata or USB on the back (refer to my post referring you to the page number), you could just buy a big drive to plug into the back of your dvr and have practically endless expansion (several terabytes with the ability to switch drives, or buy bigger drives when necessary).
