We likely will never know the story, but this seems plausible.
JL did or said something "detrimental to the team" prior to the BCSNCG. It matters not what happened, rather that CLM wanted to keep it within the circle of trust. He decided to suspend JL for the game, but would take the heat for not playing him, especially after the game plan blew up in his face. It strikes me as the kind of thing that CLM would do.
