Is Airminu finally for real?

I have been out of town and unable to watch the games, but Aminu's last few box scores have looked very good. His usual defensive stats plus a modest amount of efficient shooting. Should we chalk this up to playing teams that run and don't defend, or is he getting better?

He has basically been playing the 4 on offense and the 3 on Def and has been excelling. He and Ryno really compliment each IMO. Plus his ability to finish in transition has been outstanding this season.

He has definitely improved. Plays smarter, Rarely shoots outside, tries to get to the rim. Basically, I think is learning his role on the team and it is working.

He definitely has his moments of old where he makes you wonder what the hell he's thinking but I think he's improving. Shot and handle have improved and I actually saw him fist pump the other day which is more excitement he's shown in the last 3 years combined.

I can't remember in what context, but before the season started we had a thread about expectations and Aminu came up. A few said he would have a breakout year. This is the type of team he's built to play with. He isn't forced to score, he can focus on rebounding and defense, and he's going to get open looks when opposing teams double down on the big 3/4

I'd be happy if the only time Aminu shot was on transition. He jumps so easy. He's a crowd pumper with his dunks. Howeva, he shouldn't shoot the ball in a regular set offense.
I'm ok with him getting put backs too.

I still cringe every time he shoots a jumper but they are actually falling at a reasonable clip this year

I lol'd when he was running a fast break last night and dribbled the ball too hard causing it to fly above his head. It's something you'd see at the youth leagues at the Y.
His ball handling aside, he has been an absolute monster on the boards and our second best defender behind AD.

I think he's definitely stepped up his game. In the past he would play like this for a few games then go back to being completely useless. He hasn't regressed yet this time (*knocks on wood*). He just looks more comfortable in his role and isn't trying to do too much. There were a couple of times last night where he would dribble too much and he realized that and quickly got the ball to someone else. Seeing stuff like that is encouraging. Plus his shot has slightly improved.

He still sometimes looks like Julian Wright stumbling down the court, but that stutter-step/delayed layup on a fast break is starting to look mighty nice

Yeah he looks like a JuJu except he has been an excellent RBr (both sides), defender, and finisher at the rim!

Chief has taken a huge step thusfar. If anything, he is improving his value and therefore worth. That can be said of his defense alone.
His void in ball handling is obviously from his lack of coordination. However, I think the points y'all bring up above concerning him becoming comfortable in his role this season is part of it too. He gets nervous; he becomes out of control.

He still leads the league in "dribble off own feet" turnovers. However, his rebounding ability has shocked me to this point.

According to this site Aminu is among the top players in the league.
These guys are quite smart, but that is a bit ridiculous. I do think Aminu is much better than people generally believe. His biggest flaws are the most obvious things to see, while his strengths are tougher to discern.
Regardless, they need to bring him back on a long term deal this summer, especially if they aren't moving Anderson

I'm going to temper any excitement until we get a bigger sample size. Consistency has been his biggest issue. I want to see him play at this level for a couple of months.

Agreed. We just need to be careful to not judge him on how many jumpers he makes. That doesn't define his value as a player in New Orleans.
On this roster, he just makes so much sense.

I think he'll be willing to re-sign for a reasonable deal. He definitely fills a role on this team.

His play is one of the few things that can make Ryno work. The Jrue, Tyreke, AFA, Ryno, and AD lineup is much better than the alternative imo.
