Never mind that they're far "greener" than any other mode of transportation. It's the animal rights crowd that wants them gone:

The irony is that the horses will probably be destroyed and turned into dog food.

This fits in SFP's thread about banning activity to protect certain things or groups.

The excuse here is to protect them, but now those horses will likely be euthanized.

Why would the mayor want to outlaw a business that is pretty big with the tourists? This guy is going to be like Bloomberg on crack.

And he wants to use the "inhumane" argument? Really? They're horses! They've been pulling carriages forever!

Maybe Sonny Steele will show up and save the day, and the horses.

I've always believed that existing was preferable to not existing.

I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand there will be no more horse shite on the sidewalk, and on the other hand I have utmost contempt for a leftist's inability to go five minutes without banning something.

I do remember a few years back one of the newspapers up here doing an exposé on how mistreated and neglected the horses actually are. Certainly this business that runs these carriages should be held to some standard prohibiting animal cruelty, and I'm guessing it's possible that they can't meet those standards and enjoy profits. If they can't, I'll not weep when their business does out.

The guy will be worse than Dinkins. NYC taxes are already among the highest in the nation. I wonder what will happen when everybody that works outside the financial sector (entertainment, publishing, technology) that is already living month to month get tag teamed on additional Obama taxes / city taxes. The city already has an unsustainable financial structure in the long term......without adding more taxpayers to an already densely populated area.

How do you pay for socialized daycare? How do you pay for upgrades to a 200+ year old infrastructure?

It will be interesting indeed. If you raise taxes, do people leave, as conservative theory would indicate? Will companies like Google, Facebook, and Viacom start shifting operational jobs to cities like Atlanta, Austin, and Phoenix?

The rules concerning the tretment of these draft animals are pretty strict. For the most part they are well treated and cared for. Abusing them is a foolish business decision if nothing else. There will always be people that seem to get a high out of hurting animals, but you won't find many of them if they depend on the good health of the animals for their living.

Another example of liberalista thinking gone awry.

Of course. It would be the definition of naive to think otherwise.

Southern states would be wise to start promoting themselves.
