Jahi McMath, What the Media isn't Telling You

Thirteen-year-old Jahi McMath went into the hospital for surgery with her loving family beside her. She was pronounced brain dead shortly after the recovery from the surgery. The family is using a personal injury lawyer to stop the hospital from ending care (unplugging) since she is legally dead. Pro bono of course, but what great publicity and free advertising for him. The San Francisco Examiner published a Christmas Day blurb by McMath’s lawyer, where he once again states it was a “routine tonsillectomy”. Please note that the girl was admitted on Dec 9th, declared brain dead on Dec 12th, and this blew up on CNN within a week.

Every single report states that it is a simple tonsillectomy, but that is not the whole truth. The media knows this, but fails to report it and continues the charade. The court documents state that it was far more involved. This is not a simple tonsils-out-and-ice-cream-later procedure but a uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UP3). The AP and Huffpo call it a simple tonsillectomy despite there being court documents that show it was a UP3. A UP3 is invasive, risky and comes with complications, per the NY Times and many sleep disorder forums. They want you to think this was just a tonsillectomy to help the eventual shakedown by the family with this lawyer’s help because readers will be shocked to think someone could die from a tonsillectomy.

quote:

A UP3 is a surgery to help people suffering from sleep apnea. They never say she suffered from sleep apnea, because to mention it would distort the narrative. How is a thirteen-year-old already suffering from sleep apnea?

quote:

This surgery has plenty of side effects and risks that are compounded when a patient is obese. It is a testament to how fantastic our medical technology has become that people would rather go under the knife for things they could correct with weight loss.

Exactly, she was having this invasive procedure done because she was obese.

It's bad when even the human interest stories are built around lies. What would have been the problem with calling the procedure what it was? People would still have been sad for Jahi and I doubt it would have changed minds about the life support for most, whichever way they lean on the issue.

BTW, your link takes me to a TD stop sign

If given the option between a UPPP or lose some weight, you better believe I'm getting my arse to the gym. This is one of, if not the most, painful procedures in the ENT realm.

How is giving a reason for her surgery a stereotype? My family has generations in medicine, and presently has people in it that have well over 100 years experience in medicine between them.

well before the day is done - the current POTUS will be blamed for this on the PT board - go over to the rant and Les Miles will be the villain.

What are the odds this family was on food stamps and she probably ate breakfast lunch and dinner at school, you could say the government and her mother are 95% responsible for her death.

I pray for the family to ease their grief. I cannot imagine losing a child at such a young age no matter how they are taken.

What can be more cathartic when you lose your morbidly obese child than going for a big pay day and mugging in front of the cameras when you have the opportunity?

Thanks for the post. I had no idea the case was a UPPP as this was never reported in any media report I heard. As a healthcare provider intimately associated with the perioperative period I had been following the case somewhat. The potential complications between the two different surgeries are significantly different.

You didn't post the link to your article nor a link to any story referenced so I did a google search and clicked the first story which was cnn and which showed your story's contention that
quote:

Every single report states that it is a simple tonsillectomy, but that is not the whole truth.
to be untrue.

From CNN:
quote:

Family members say the 8th grader was alert and talking after doctors removed her tonsils, adenoids and extra sinus tissue in a surgery earlier this month. Doctors had recommended the surgery to treat pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, a condition which made her stop breathing in her sleep and caused other medical problems.
LINK Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (also known by the abbreviations UPPP and UP3) is a surgical procedure or sleep surgery used to remove tissue in the throat. While CNN didn't give the name of the surgery, they accurately described it and did not say it was a simple tonsillectomy.

If this issue is important enough to you to start a thread, it should be important enough to google and verify it's accuracy. As is the case in each and every one of these threads, started daily here, the MSM is attacked for alleged inaccuracies while inaccuracies of the far right bloggers are ignored.

Some fat girl is on life support and the hospital wants to pull the plug and the family wants her to remain on life support. The CNN article says the hospital is correct. I really don't know what the OP is bitching about except to claim all media said the original operation was a "simple tonsillectomy". I saw one article I linked and the op claim is wrong. But hey he read a blog that attacked the MSM so he copied it.
