Anyone thinking the Falcons are just going to cede this game to the Panthers is stupid. If Mike Smith has any desire to keep his job, he will try to end the season well by taking down the division leaders at home. Plus, he will want to end the season on a high note. Unless he was personally provided some direction by the GM/owner to roll over the last game (highly doubtful) he will be playing for his job, as will a lot of guys on that roster right now. Atlanta has a hard enough job filling up their dome when they are winning games - how do you think they'll do next season if they decide to just fold on the last game at home. They have nothing to lose, that's what makes them so dangerous to Carolina.

Do I think they'll win? I'd give it 10-20%, it's the NFL and anything can happen.

Nobody, at least nobody with a brain, thinks that the Falcons' players, coaches, water boys, or anybody else actually involved in the outcome are going to roll over and cede the game to Carolina. Don't worry about it.

Why not? A 4-12 season should at least put any head coach in the NFL on notice. He may not be gone this year, but if he trips up next year just about anything he can hang his hat on at the end of the year helps his case. No one wants to lose in the NFL, no one.

This is where I get pessimistic. I feel like there is a certain similarity or parallel between professional athletes and music, rock music, live concert acts, and how they do things.

Generally speaking, are (or were) the Rolling Stones the "Greatest Rock 'N Roll Band In The World?" YES. Does a band like Metallica or KISS, a huge arena and festival act, do they bring it full on, to the best of their abilities, every time they step on stage, every show they do? SURE THEY DO. They're paid handsomely for their talent, they're heroes, they perform in front of packed houses, living the dream, and they represent the top of their entire field, just like professional football players do.

But here is the question - do they REALLY put on the same intensity of a show in Yugoslavia on night #286 of the tour, that they do in Wembley Stadium to a packed house? Do they really play the last show of the last night of the tour as heartfelt as the first one where they are filming a TV performance or concert movie? The real answer is they are human, and no, they don't. That's why I have trouble buying in to the Falcons suddenly looking like a playoff worthy team tomorrow.

I think if the Falcons win tomorrow it will have more to do with Carolina playing poorly than anything. They are a hit/miss team, and Cam Newton is still not the leader he should be.

I think if Carolina comes out early and beats up that pathetic defense, gets a 14 or 17 point lead on them early, the Falcons won't have the incentive. But if Carolina comes out and makes a bunch of mistakes, turnovers, coaching errors, etc, they have a shot to really blow this one. Whatever you do when you are playing an underdog, you never ever ever let them get momentum on you. When they do you've lost.

I think the rest of your post could've been a lot shorter and spared us all the rock band tour analogies. Be pessimistic because Carolina is a lot better than Atlanta. Plain and simple.

I have hope for that same reason, I'm interested to see how Carolina plays with the division title on the line. They haven't had that kind of pressure on them. You can argue they had close to that last weekend, but they also played like crap most of last weekend. We just matched them.

Dude isn't even on the mildly warm seat.

I don't think the Falcons are going to roll over, but get the frick out of here with Smith coaching for his job.
