Would bowl games bring more revenue if they were played on campus?

At the higher rated team's stadium?
They would sell more tickets and the TV revenue would be the same if not more.
They wouldn't get the warm weather destinations all the time.
Not talking about BCS bowls, or Cotton/Cap One, etc., but these low level ones.

I am pretty sure 3,000 people showed up to Reliant.
Bowl games need to die, most of them.

The majority of the money comes from TV and sponsors...ticket sales to fans isn't that important and the bowl doesn't actually care all that much how easy/hard it is for fans to get there. Sure, they want to sell as many as possible to look good and get tourists in, but its not a big deal if they don't.
Doing it at home would penalize the athletes though since the main redeeming quality of a lot of these bowls is getting to go on mini-vacations and get gifts, etc.
The main people your idea would help is the athletic departments because they wouldn't have to pay travel for the team and eat as many tickets every year.

The playoff games are going to be worse, IMO. The logistics and expense of fans traveling week to week is going to deter most of the average fans. You simply can't go to the SEC Championship game one weekend, the semifinals the next weekend, then BCS final the third weekend if your respective team were to make it.
The death of these meaningless bowls are quickly approaching, IMO.

attendance at the Texas Bowl is usually fairly decent.
next year it will get the #3 Big 12 pick and an SEC team.

But then unless Tulane is playing in a huge game. NOLA hotels couldn't rape my wallet for a hotel room for nye

The sponsors of most bowls have a local connection to that bowl so moving them to increase attendance would kill your sponsorship money.

Going to 3 games instead 2 could be an issue, but it's more spread out than that. It's Saturday, December 6--Thursday, January 1--Monday, January 12.

How would you determine the higher rated team between two teams with identical records?

What about a matchup like the music city bowl where both are 7-5?

BCS is no more after jan 6th

Talk about an automatic favorite. Not only is one team ranked higher, but they would then get to play a home game. I would say every bowl would average a 7 point spread for the highest ranked.

This wasn't a problem pre-BCS...

no offense, but why is that even a concern? bowls are like ad hoc corporations that put on an event to bring tourists to a particular city. they are sponsored by the hotels, restaurants, etc and it is they that underwrite the event. tv money has become the main source of revenue. the market determines the number of bowls.
the players enjoy them. the coaches get to practice their teams an extra period of time and get to see more of what their next years team can do.
so if no one shows up, who cares?
imo, college football has saturated the market and hit their limit as a means of entertainment. when I was younger, my Tigers were on the tube about once per year (twice counting the bowl), season tickets were less than %100 each, the parking was free and there was no mandantory booster fee. going to the game was a blast and the entertainment value was extremely high even if the opponent was a cupcake (we played more local cupcakes like Tulane who we hated). fast forward to the present and I can watch dozens of games on my HD big screen each weekend and catch replays of others later in the week. LSU is on virtually every week and the commercial breaks are not that annoying because i'm at home. my costs are thousands of dollars less per year.
even though i'm not sure where college football is heading but it's too big right now for just alumnae to support it. i believe it will begin to lose it's appeal to non alumnae and will shrink as an entertainment option overall. personally, i'm OK with that. after all, it's a COLLEGE SPORT.

I wonder what's in the future for college football leaders in terms of trying to gouge fans.
Like you said it's hit it's peak, downturn is coming.
They'll have to keep revenue up somehow.

They're getting a shite ton from TV and corporate deals.
Basically, the games will become more corporate and have more affluent fans/alumni in the stadium for certain schools.
