Sighting in a rifle

Recently got a new scope put on my .270 and they bore sighted it. I was gonna take it to the camp and sight it in but am kind of limited to how far I can sight it in without taking it to a food plot to get the target at 100+ yards. The place where I got the scope said you could shoot at a target 25yds away and sight it to where you are a couple of inches high there... Has anyone ever done this?? I had never heard of that
Thanks ob
Thanks ob

The person who mounted your scope is a moron.
How one can honestly guess at a rifle and given load's behavior and project it out from 25 yards is beyond me.
Now that I'm done bitching, I really have an ethical problem with taking a gun in the woods that you have no idea where point of impact will be at your desired zero. Besides, as a hunter, don't you want to know before taking the shot?
A lot of sheriffs ranges have 100 yard shots. A bore sight will put you on paper at 25 yards. Going a few inches high there is probably a good way to be on paper at 100 and then be able to dial the zero in.

Couple inches high at 25 yds will hit the moon at 150

I had always shot and sighted at targets 100+ yards away and had never heard of the 25 yard thing. Sounded to good to be true.
Just trying to figure out the easiest way to sight my gun in around the camp without scaring the deer off

25 yds you want to be like an inch low, that'll put you close to 0 depending on what range u want to be zeroed at

Your scope mount is prolly inch and half high, you are slowly 'rising your bullet' to line of sight
The got websites you can graph all this

Chad is correct- if you look at Hornady's chart for their plain whitetail .270 load, it's -1.50" muzzle, +1.50" 100 yards, and 0" 200 yards.

I've always heard 2" low at 25 will put you on at 100

Doesn't make sense if your scope mount is inch and half than barrel

Go check out the nikon spot on website or app. I sighted my new scope in at 15 yards. I have killed two this year. One at about 170 yards and one at about 40 yards. This us using a Redfield scope.

According to a ballistics app, you should be .7 inches low at 25 yards with a 150 grain bullet. That should be dead on at 100.

I have this Redhead bore sighter that has worked pretty well for me in the past. You basically look through your scope at a scope looking deal you put in the end of the barrel that has a grid on it. You can go left/right/up/down in 1/2 MOA increments. It has gotten all of my rifles pretty close at 100yds
ETA: I can sight in any gun, of any caliber with the thing(rifle, pistol, shotgun)

Remington has a app that you can download that will tell you where you need to be at 25yds to be 0 at 200yds. My .35 whelen is about -.4" at 25yds and 0 at 200. It fluctuates a little til it gets to 200. I think is is no more than 1" high or low from 50-200yds. Get the app, site accordingly and you should be fine.

LSU,
Congrats on the new scope! Generally speaking, w/ most high velocity rounds, like the 270 Win, if the elevation is sighted in dead on at 25 yards, the gun will print approx 3" high at 100 yds. That's just a rough approximation. In addition, remember that a shot that's a "little" bit off at 25 yards will off by a factor of 4 at 100 yds. When my 308 Win handgun is sighted 1/2" low at 25 yards, it's 1/2" high at 50 and 1 1/2" high at 100. If sighting in a rifle, I shoot it at 25 yds first. If it's w/in an inch or two, I move the target to 50 yards, then 100 yards. I shoot just enough at the closer ranges to confirm it'll be on paper at 100 yards.
Here's a more detailed description. How to Sight in a Rifle.

Did u just congrats on the scope him?

Just remember everything said thus far deals with elevation only, don't forget windage, 1/2 inch at 25 yards might be 12" at 150
Do what you can at 25 yards but at least take one shot @100
And one shot in a food plot at 10:30 ain't going to scare a deer off at 4 pm

I wouldnt go anywhere without verifying something or some sort, let alone taking a shot at a living animal.
When I mount a scope, I take 1@25, 1@50, and then shoot a group at 100. Im making adjustments at all 3. During that whole time, I got the chrono out to get the velocities and record all that. Plug all that data and DA into the ballistic charts and get your hold overs or adjustments. Just my opinion.

i'm dead on at 25 almost 3" high at 100 then zero at 200. by only sighting in at 25. then i shot the other ranges just to make sure.
