Saturday and Sunday (28th/29th) are doe days for Area 9, but apparently the deer are rutting.

Freezer's empty and could use some meat...would you shoot a doe or wait for horns?

I ran into this same dilemma this past Saturday in Area 4, took the doe. Now the pressure is off for meat and it'll be easier to watch the does and wait for a buck.

In most areas the mature does are already breed. I would shoot a cull buck or a button buck.

Don't shoot your seed son.

You should be able to tell if a doe is hot or being followed

I hope you meant something other than what I'm reading.

Meh, it doesn't matter if you shoot her pre or post rut. Either way she won't be having fawns.

The only reason not to shoot a doe late is if you would be uncomfortable seeing the fetuses when you clean her.

That's what I've always said. Why does it matter if you shoot her in October or January? Either way she's not having any more fawns.

For the OP, we try to shoot all of our does by mid December. Our rut kicks in around Jan 1, so we like to have everything calm for a week or 2 before they start chasing.

We won't shoot them until after the rut solely to have them around to increase the odds of luring in the big boys.

I have always thought like this as well. But a few years ago I read an article about herd management and it said that if your property is carrying too many does, then the bucks won't have to get up and move much to breed- thus reducing your chances of seeing any chasing or cruising bucks.

Our property has plenty of does, so now we try to shoot some early and leave enough for breeding, but not so many that the bucks never roam very far looking to breed.
