LINK Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe

This is pure Southern Gothic Genius. It could only come from The American South, it stems from a time when America was MUCH more regional, it is the most "Mississippi" a song has ever sounded, and yes IWHI. It knocked Sgt. Pepper's off first place on the album charts. It is one of the all time great female vocal performances in terms of regional authenticity. Listening to it brings you to an entirely different time and place. It is GREAT Southern story-telling and the strings matched against the acoustic simplicity is masterful. It is undeniably dark, it evokes wonderful shades of grey and undeniable moral ambiguity, and like life it leaves us with few tidy answers.

All together a brilliant expression of another time, in the forgotten American South.

I don't think you'll need to defend anything about that song here.

Duck Dynasty guy would have been appreciative of Billy Joe McAllister jumping off the Tallahatchie bridge.

Ever so often I'll throw that one in the playlist just to watch my bandmates' do the double-take. We do it real greezy and groovy, but I ain't no Bobby Gentry.

DMX Prayer 1-5

He is such a misunderstood artist, and such a great Christian.

that song might not be for everyone but the thread title is very misleading. It's not like it's an OTown or william hung song or something.
