I just finished S1 of "Hello Ladies" and decided to lookup some ino on S2. After reading a few articles here and there I came across this.

quote:

Even in its heyday, HBO had critical and commercial underperformers. “Hung” springs readily to mind while completing two separate double entendres. “The Wire,” though brilliant from its inception, was not an immediate draw. (I remember back when I had to force-feed its genius to my fellow journalists. What a great time for invoking latent prejudice!)
quote:

Nowadays, with the ascendance of FX, AMC, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon and all other tribes participating in the Original Programming Wars, the battlefield has become impenetrably crowded, especially for humbler, less ambitious shows like “Getting On.”

quote:

You might expect a show with the impressive imprimatur and sheer production grandeur of “Boardwalk Empire” to incite more furor than steady, dispassionate griping about its excessive violence. Apparently, though, HBO may possess only one beloved, costumed epic at a time. When “Game of Thrones” returns this year on the backs of dragons, it will undoubtedly give the cable giant reason to trot out the old “not TV” slogan once again.

HBO is GOAT in my opinion and never lost its dominance at all to me. They've always had at least one really good show on at any given time IMO

I don't buy that bs. HBO does it right. Sure they missed on breaking bad but whatever. I don't think you can say that because amc and fx have had more success that means hbo now sucks. I think hbo will strengthen as a result because no matter what amc and fx does, hbo can go that much further and push itself to so more.

This. Showtime is good with Homeland and Masters of Sex right now, and AMC is good with Walking Dead and The Killing, but HBO is the SEC. Depth and consistency. Consistently puts out the #1 show. You go from Oz to The Sopranos to The Wire to Game of Thrones. Then add in Band of Brothers, The Pacific, all the Sports docs...come on.

I'm banking on "True Detective" being a hit.

I don't know about that. Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire are the only cable shows I download.

Ok I will type too ....I disagree.... Typical Hollywood movies are dying...they stay alive by teenagers with a rechurned famaliar name action movie.... HBO/AMAZON/NETFLIX will continue to grow due to the lack of good movies and the demand for the "series" format

Exactly. HBO still has plenty of good shows. We just see that other networks like FX and AMC have stepped their game up,to have fantastic shows as well.

We all win because we get more top notch TV.

If everything was relegate to Sunday night on HBO we likely not have various series between GOT, boardwalk, mad men, sons, justified, walking dead, killing, homeland, dexter, and a number of other shows. HBO could only handle a few of those, not all.

I do like that the author used " imprimatur" correctly. Great word

Completely disagree with the article. GoT viewer ratings have greatly increased since S1 and a ton of people pirate it online. 14.2 million viewers is what they figured last season (and the Sopranos at its peak had 14.4 million).

HBO is always good for a couple heavy hitters such as BE and GoT, but I think the other networks mentioned are slowly catching up. I think HBO will always have one or two bell cows that will keep them out front, but their "second tier," for lack of a better word, shows don't really stand out from the others.

I really liked Hello Ladies and hope it stays on, but the new show with the guy dressed up as a 14 year old school girl is ridiculous. I don't know who told HBO this was a good idea, but that show is a new low for HBO.

Still top dog, but gap has closed. It is the sincerest form of flattery. HBO showed it could work and others have stepped forward.

Chris Lilly is pretty funny. His shows we can be heroes and summer heights high were big hits. Ja'mie is just a spin off from those like angry boys.

Disagree. They're the best.

Now that Breaking Bad has ended, HBO has by FAR the 2 best shows on TV right now in Boardwalk Empire and GOT. It really isn't close.

Absolutely this. My favorite show on television for 3+ years running is Boardwalk Empire, which is every bit as good as The Sopranos, The Wire, etc. IMO.

Add to it still running shows like GoT and even Girls (guilty pleasure but also highly acclaimed) and HBO is still the best in the biz.

Do you people really pay 17 bucks a month for HBO?

I don't think anyone is debating if HBO has top tier dramas [BE & GOT]. I think that the number of thirty minute comedies that bottom out have slightly hurt HBO [How To Make It In America,Hung,Bored To Death,Enlightenment].

HBO hasn't lost it's dominances. But, some of the products have been lackluster.
