Vampire Academy

Trailer

It's like Harry Potter... but with VAMPIRES!!

Saw this preview before Catching Fire last night (which, btw, not a bad flick), and I damn near fell out of my chair from laughing so hard. Pretty sure it wasn't meant to be funny.

I feel like this film is 4 years too late.

Will it be Sharknado good is the key question?

Yeah...it's nothing like Harry Potter. It's one of the more popular YA books series in the past several years. I read a ton of YA fiction along with my kid when he was doing the AR thing for school, so I've read most of the popular YA series - and this is one of the better ones. They are intentionally interjecting more humor than the books though in an attempt to get away from the "brooding" Twilight vibe. The screenplay is by David Waters, who wrote the screenplay for "Heathers," and the director is his brother, Mark Waters, who directed "Mean Girls." They are attempting to capitalize on that "Mean Girls/Heathers" dark comedy vibe to generate broader appeal, but so far they are just pissing off the loyal book followers. Like most of the other YA series that have attempted to fill that "Twilight/Harry Potter" void (that so far only "Hunger Games" has been successful at), this one will likely do just well enough for them to be on the fence about a sequel (just like Percy Jackson, Beautiful Creatures, Mortal Instruments, etc.).

It certainly seems like it from the trailers.

Still seems like a stupid idea, but, hell, that doesn't mean it won't sell. I'll probably actually watch it one day on Netflix or TBS.

My roommate got home from the Hobbit and he kept talking about how bad this movie looked.

He actually talked about it more than he did the 3 hour movie he went to see. I think it scarred him for life.

If a movie you go see has this trailer playing...its a pretty good indication that you must be a thirteen year old girl.

aside from it being set at a school I really didn't get that vibe at all.

feels more like a sexed up vampire version of XMen meets Fast Times at Ridgemont High to me.

Did they not play the Bieber movie preview? I'm pretty sure I was the only person laughing through the Bieber movie preview.

Ahh....I see now. The new criteria for a movie being a Harry Potter clone is "there's a school in the movie."
