What would happen in this situation? (General CFB question)

I'm sorry for the unremarkable title, but I couldn't think of a better one.

Let's say a team goes 5-7 one year in CFB. However, their conference record for that year was 5-3, enough to get them to the conference championship.

If they were to win and be 6-7, they would still have a losing record so would they go to a bowl?

If they were to lose and drop to 5-8, would they still be bowl-eligible considering they were in the conference championship in the first place?

Has this ever happened before?

If I am not mistaken, they have had to use teams with losing records in the past to fill bowl games up already.

what if all the best teams in a conference are on probation and the best team not is 4-4 in conf. they win the Conf CG and finish 5-8. do they go to a bowl as conf champ?

6-7 conference champ is in.

6-7 conference loser is eligible, but after all other 6-6 teams.

Teams with losing records have played in bowls before. It isn't the exact scenario you described but I believe that teams that are 6-6 can petition the NCAA prior to the conference championship games in case they lose. Georgia Tech was 6-7 after they lost to FSU in the ACC championship last year.

In your scenario, I assume a conference champion would represent the conference, even with a losing record.

it only takes 6 wins to be bowl eligible (as has already been pointed out). In theory I suppose a team could win a conference championship and not be bowl eligible (in a weak division and a poor out of conference recrod) but that's obviously more than a little bit of a long shot

Yep, and probably to the bowl where that conference's champion goes to, unless it is a BCS bowl. Isn't there some stipulation to the BCS bowls beyond just conf champ?

In short, it isn't the losing record, it is the 6 wins. You could play at Hawaii, have an extra home game, end the season 6-7, but 6-2 in your division, go to the championship game, lose, and be 6-8, and still go bowling.
