UPDATE: Texas Coaching Search - Tier 1 and Tier 2 lists

Now with Mack out of the way, here are the Tier 1 names that been batted about by UT "insiders". UT will be trying to make a splash hire and some of these names are big splashes. Do you think the right amount of money can get any of these Tier 1 guys below to jump to Austin?

Notes:
- Saban still very much in play, despite new contract.
- I have now been told that Briles is very much in play and would be at the top of Tier 2.
- reports of Jim Harbaugh's wife missing the days when Jim coached in college (ie, more time with family).
- Saban and Meyer remain top choices.

Tier 1 List:
Nick Saban: Age 62 - seventh year as head coach of Alabama. Won at BCS title at LSU and has won three at Alabama. Agreed to a $7.5 million/year contract on Saturday.

Urban Meyer: Age 49 - second year as head coach of Ohio State. Won two BCS titles at Florida. While between Florida and Ohio State jobs, expressed interest in Texas job if it were to become available.

Jim Harbaugh: Age 49 - third year as head coach of San Francisco 49ers. Led 49ers to Super Bowl appearance in 2012. Previous college coaching experience at San Diego State and Stanford. Has three young kids with second wife.

Jimbo Fisher: Age 48 - fourth year as head coach of Florida State. Previously was offensive coordinator under Bobby Bowden at Florida State and Nick Saban at LSU. Has Florida State in BCS title game, and was offensive coordinator at LSU in 2003 when they won BCS title.

Gus Malzahn: Age 48 - first year as head coach of Auburn. Has Auburn in BCS title game, and was offensive coordinator at Auburn in 2010 when they won BCS title. Only has two years of college head coaching experience.

Les Miles: Age 60 - ninth year as head coach of LSU. Won BCS title in 2007 and was runner-up in 2011. Daughter is a swimmer at UT.

Mike Tomlin: Age 41 - seventh year as head coach of Pittsburgh Steelers. Led Steelers to Super Bowl victory in 2008. Previous college assistant coaching experience from 1995-2000. Tomlin is known for his resemblance to actor Omar Epps.

Mike McCarthy: Age 50 - eighth year as head coach of Green Packers. Limited college coaching experience. Owns lake house on Lake Travis in Austin. Has two young kids.

Tier 2 List:
Art Briles
David Shaw
Charlie Strong
Pat Fitzgerald
James Franklin
Jim Mora, Jr.
Bill O'Brien
Mark Dantonio
Scott Frost
Kirby Smart

No James Franklin I thought for sure Texas would be going after him.

Why in the hell would Harbaugh and/or Tomlin leave the the League for a college job?

very good question...my guess is that they might be able to make more money coaching at UT with fewer work hours...

I'm sure from a stress point it would significantly easier, but they're both doing well and are at some of the better franchises.

Shocking. Only 2.5 years older than one of your "tier 1" members.

Dolla bills. What if Texas offers Harbaugh 7.5MM/yr? He makes around 5 now, coupled with no state income tax in Texas, it'd be really hard to not at least seriously consider a +50% (more considering taxes) pay raise. Not to mention he was a college coach before. I don't get the Tomlin suggestion. That makes zero sense to me.

They should have a good shot with Fisher and everyone below that on that list. Possibly Gus as well. The top 3 no way

Tomlin would like the college jump, you get to cheat and seldom get caught.

serious question but why isn't Saban on that list? do people really think texas isn't going to make a huge push for him now? and do people REALLY think he wouldn't leave Bama in the night if the push is big enough?

it IS saban we're talking about. that's just my 2 cents.

Sorry, might have worded it wrong. I don't really understand why the UT admin would be interested (if they are) in Tomlin over many, many other candidates.

As a fan, I'll be disappointed if it's not one of:

Harbaugh
Malzahn
Meyer
Strong
Maybe Franklin
Briles

At this point, I'm still undecided on guys like Strong/Franklin. While some of the others are reaches, we should be aiming very high with this hire.

He's a great coach. The pro game and the college game are 100% different. He's not "beneath" anyone. I just don't know why people assume he would be successful in college just based on the fact he won a Super Bowl.

Yeah Tomlin is a great NFL coach but having no college experience should be a huge strike against him. It can't be easy to learn how to recruit as the head man on the fly

Vegas still has Saban as the best odds to end up the next coach at UT since he has no buyout clause in the new contract. But I don't see it happening. Vegas may do well with picking ballgames but I don't think Saban is stupid enough to have the Dolphins/Bama situation happen twice.

Already signed an extension with Auburn, just like Nick Saban with Alabama (both done due to the crazy, unconfirmed rumors that they wanted the Texas head coaching job).

His name can be taken off.
