Well after over a year of waiting for my rifle to be completed and researching it more than I thought humanly possible I finally got to burn some powder in my new 6.5.

My last group was a 10 shot group at 300 yards, I laid a quarter over the 10 holes in the paper. I have NEVER shot a group of that nature much less with a barrel that really isn't broken in yet. I can't wait to shoot it again! It seems to me all the fuss over this newer round is warranted.

Sounds fun. The 6.5 is def for real. Give us the specs on your rifle.

FTR, barrel break in is largely rumored to be BS. As a matter of fact, I have read articles by a legendary barrel maker (can't remember each one) and he explained how any barrel is losing accuracy with every bullet down the tube. It really made a lot of sense. Just throwing that out there.

"In the right hands" would be what most would say, but the 6.5 Swede has been used for years to take animals as big as moose in Europe. Been a while since I compared the two but I think the Creedmore has a little more gas then the old swede. That may have more to do with the fact that the swede is an old round and the creedmore has been pushed by Hornady, who has a reputation for fast rounds.

I have yet to try the round out first hand on whitetail, but it is a great round for them. I plan on shooting a 129 grain SST for now and I tested penetration today and it went through two haybales and stopped in a third. I have to believe that with that ability even hitting bone on big game (elk and the like) it would be dooable.

However elk and larger with a 6.5 creed is a HUGE debate. There are many that kill them with the round all the time. However I think ultimately I would take my .06 with me for them. That may change after I shoot more stuff with this as this is a competition type gun I plan on hunting with it.

This is a picture that the company sent me before shipping best I have right now.

As an aside I went with a Swaro 5-25 x 56 ballistic turret for my scope.

Infidel,
Here's Shilen's rec for "barrel break in." Shilen Break In

This may be some of the info you mentioned Barrel Break In is Bad

More info from a custom barrel maker. Gale McMillan

Thanks. Good info. I am looking to buy my own deer rifle in the next few years, but these less common rounds, while intriguing, scare me.

I will be using it for my entry into long range shooting and I also plan to hunt with it. Currently I have WAY too many warts in my technique to ever consider competition. This whole process started about two years ago when I said you know it would be really cool to be able to shoot a rifle from one end of my property to the other and actually hit what I was aiming at. (about 800 yards). Two years later I now have a tool to achieve my initial goal and hopefully become a much more competent rifle shot.

See I look at it a bit different. Post scare last year I decided I wanted an "off the wall round". After spending the better part of a year not being able to buy rounds, or components for my .308 or .30-06 I decided proven and mainstream aren't always that good. With this round I think I can get bullets or components to re load even if another panic strikes. I also believe this round is gaining popularity very quickly, the fact that the last 3 1,000 yard opens have been won with this round seem to back that up.

How hard is it to find ammo though and how expensive? Do you plan to reload?

I will likely end up reloading, however another plus of the creed is that factory loads are considered almost as accurate as hand loads. What I shot the 10 shot group with was 129 grain Hornady SST bullets.

RIght now there are plenty of bullets out there available, four months ago there were plenty but less of the 140 grain than there are today. I am not convinced finding bullets will be difficult.

It's definitely an interesting round. I figured when you said you were looking to get into long range shooting that if you weren't hand loading yet, you would be soon.
