CBS is saying the Texans and Vikings have contacted O'Brien, and the Redskins consider him a candidate.

He is building something great at PSU, and Hackenberg should get even better over the next 2-3 years. He gone? He stay?

I don't see why he would leave now when he stuck around after last year. The sanctions are about to wear off and the Big 10 is weak and ripe for the picking.

Isn't his buyout absolutely absurd too?

I'm reading after the contract renegotiation last year, the buyout went from $18mil to $7.73mil. Per ProFootballTalk

I could see him staying at PSU but it may be hard to say no to the NFL. That said that fan base worships him and that's hard to do after Joe Pa. My guess is they'll get some cash together to throw at him but even if he does leave PSU can do nothing but tip their hat to the guy. He kept PSU aloft and got everyone to believe again.

Great coach and I'd flog Richt publicly if it'd get him in Athens.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rappaport, O’Brien has agreed to interview with the Texans about the vacant head coaching position. Not surprisingly, O’Brien is being considered one of the top candidates for the job.

quote:

The buyout clause is certainly not the deterring factor it may have once been, and O’Brien has certainly earned an opportunity to explore all of his options. O’Brien has said before that the highest level of the profession of a football coach is in the NFL, and his statements have hinted that it would be something he would be interested in pursuing.

More info:

quote:

Rapoport notes that O'Brien's NFL buyout was reduced from $13 million to $6.5 million in March. That news was made public in June.

quote:

It is surprising from the outside that an NFL team would be so willing to pay a big buyout, but $6.5 million is a relatively small sum for an NFL owner. Rapoport reported that Lovie Smith has already interviewed for the Texans job.

Why would Penn St agree to do that?

they agreed to the first lowering, so why not another? Sounds like PSU will try to bring Schiano in. The move everyone has figured would happen.

I hope he stays but if he goes I can understand and I would thank him for helping bring PSU out of their funk.

If O'Brien leaves why wouldn't Penn State look at Al Golden. He has Penn State ties.

Golden might have a good thing going in Miami. Not saying it is a better job, but not a bad place to be. Munchak with the Tennessee Titans could be the top target if O'Brien leaves.

I think PSU would be the only place he'd leave Miami for. I agree he's got things going down there.

I still think Schiano is #1 on the list. He was basically waiting in the wings to replace Joe.

Ad if i was him, i'd bolt from Buccs, screw those wussy pro players. He'd also take the job, in my opinion

Mort just tweeted that talks between O'Brien and the Texans are heating up and both sides hope an agreement will be reached soon.

That would be great for both sides actually, I wonder if Schiano would be too proud to admit failure and move on before he gets canned next year though.
