I see the Texas 2013 coaching search going down similar to the Auburn 2012 coaching search.

Auburn had some big names thrown out at the beginning of the search including: Jeff Fisher, Jimbo Fisher, Patterson, and Peterson.

As the search continued the names became less prestigious and included Malzahn, Smart, Petrino, and Strong.

Auburn eventually hired CGM and most of the fan base was underwhelmed for a few weeks before we hopped on the bus.

Texas is going to do the same thing with the big names being even bigger and will include Saban, Fisher, and some NFL guys etc….

I don’t see one of these initial big names going to Texas and Texas will eventually have to hire a up and coming coach, or do what Arkansas did and hire a mediocre coach from a mediocre program and hope that putting the mediocre coach with a great program (or in Arkansas’s case in a great conference) will elevate the mediocre coach to a good coach.

My guess is Texas will search for a up and coming coach.

As with Auburn, Texas can be a great opportunity for the right up and coming coach and if Texas hires the right young coach they can be right back in the mix.

Texas's bank accounts > Auburn's bank accounts

Texas will get their big name. Even if it's not Saban.

Well, ESPN did quote an SI article last night, alleging that Malzahn said Texas was his dream job.

Of course, there was no quote in that SI article, it was just Thamel making shite up per usual.

Texas is arguably the best coaching job in college football. You can't really compare Texas to Auburn.

But you may be right. I guess we shall find out together.

Sure you can. They're both major CFB players who will go huge and see what happens. The point is Texas may eventually settle for a high-end, less splashy hire. I'm not sure that is how it'll work, but it's an analogy, not an assertion that Texas and Auburn are the same.

Other than the money, I still think Bama is the best coaching job in college football. Especially if you can cope with living in Tuscaloosa.

Did you really jump on the Gus bus a few weeks after he got there?

Really? Be honest...

And Auburn =/= Texas.

What the OP described is how most coaching searches go. Start with the biggest name out there and then after several huge names get raises from their established program, settle on an up and comer from a smaller school.

Except this is not most coaching searches. This is Texas, the #1 job. And it has more the feel of the Ohio State job after Tressell. While Urban was still coaching at Florida, rumors were swirling about him taking the OSU job. Sure enough, when it came open a year later, he was waiting in line. Likewise these Saban to UT rumors have been circulating for 2-3 years. Now the job is open. Saban's not denying anything, so he's at least thinking about it if he hasnt already decided to go.

I think you're exactly right except for...

Texas wants a "proven" guy. Too much money and influence to take a chance on an up and coming guy.

Malzahn was an "up and coming" HC, but Auburn fans were comfortable with him because of 2010. I don't know if there's anybody out thier that fits the bill for UT. I think a big hurdle for UT will be their ability to get over their own arrogance and realize that not every coach is just dying to come to Austin. (The same could be said for many other programs: Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Florida, USC, etc)

Well sure they are both major CFB programs, but in regards to hiring a prestigious coach Texas is much more favorable.

Texas wants someone that can recruit with the huge draw that is the sec. A&M moving to the sec has made UT second fiddle in the state and UT dosent like that. They need a big name and proven recruiter at Texas and NS is at the top of that list.

So basically what it all comes down to is timing. Unemployed or unhappy coach + big name job opening.

Do you really think that Alabama was Nick Saban's dream job? He was unhappy in the NFL and Alabama was the best job available. Everybody knew Urban Meyer wasn't going to stay retired for long, but the OSU job just kind of fell in his lap. If Tressell doesn't F'up, he's still at OSU. I doubt it was Bert Belima's dream to go to Fayetteville. He was just pissed at Wisc. and Ark was willing to pay.

I look around and think who might fit the bill for UT (i.e. who is a good establihsed coach who might be silently looking to make a move)? This is wild shot in the dark, but what about Mark Richt? He seems to always be on the hot seat at UGA. He just lost his 4 year starting QB. He's been at UGA for over 10 years. Might be time for him to get a change of scenery.

Don't disagree, but the rise of a lot of decent programs have made it easier to say no to good jobs. I can perfectly accept that for similar money, Gus would rather be in Auburn than Bama/Texas/etc. Same for Peterson at UW and a bunch of other coaches. The difference here is the lengths UT is willing to go to change minds.

Maybe, but I really feel like this Mack Brown shitshow will turn away most of the high profile guys. There's no guarantee you can win and who would want to go down in flames like Mack Brown?

Texas >>> Auburn

But I agree. It's all names like Saban & Gruden right now.

Then they will move on to more realistic candidates like James Franklin, Charlie Strong and Art Briles.

It will likely be one of those three guys IMO.

It's certainly about timing, but these guys (like Urban Meyer) can make the timing be whatever they want.

My point is jobs like Ohio State and Texas are not in the same league as jobs you mentioned like Auburn and Arkansas (or LSU or even Bama for that matter).

Why, because Saban went there and built a dynasty? If Saban was never hired and they wouldn't have won any titles, would you be saying the same thing? I don't think so.
