I get a chance to hunt a private ranch in Laredo, TX this year. Anybody ever hunted around Laredo? They told me to get the extra license that includes "exotics." What type of exotics are in Texas? Big deer here? TIA

Exotics are released. Could be anything from antelope to fallow deer

Not sure about all the details. My buddy is a salesman for an international company and the place I am going is the company ranch. Really nice apparently, with all the bells and whistles. I have a feeling it will be like a petting zoo from what he told me.

There is no exotics stamps or extra license you need to buy if you are going to buy the out of state non resident hunting license. Just be ready to pay the 315.00 for it.

There are all types of exotics in that area. Axis / sheep / rams / black buck maybe even nilgai

This is the one time I would recommend that you not hunt with a bow, I haven't ventured to Laredo in ten years but if I were to go back now I would be holstering an AR with a few hand grenades, your going into the heart of cartel country.

TexasTiger, are you sure about that? I called the wildlife and fisheries today and they told me I needed both. The 5 day non resident special hunt is only 48.00, but yeah I almost had a heart attack when I saw the 315.00 price tag for the non resident big game. You would think Texas would have a 3 or 5 day non resident. I will gladly pay it though because it sounds like this will be a fun trip.

add on red stag and that's the extent of the exotics I've heard as well

a buddy saw a red stag at his lease in Hondo 2 weeks ago

Rick, I am sure it is ok where this is at. They take some pretty influential people to this place for big money contracts. I don't think they would put them in jeopardy, but I will have a rifle in hand though, just in case.

TexasTiger, if you had a choice to kill any of those exotics, which one would you choose? I am more concerned about the meat than the trophy. What's the best to eat?

I would kill as many Axis Does as they would let me if I was after exotic meat...

Also I thought for sure the 315.00 dollar license took care of everything...I thought the non resident 5 day for 48.00 was basically for people that just want to hunt exotics or hogs.. But if you call the TPWD and they said you needed both then you probably do.

Agreed, an Axis steak will be the best you've ever eaten. I would go axis, then elk if you have a choice. Not too crazy about the taste of Nilgai.

Also look at having the Axis hides tanned ... very nice if the wife is into that sort of thing...

My buddy said basically you kill whatever you want (within the limit) and they clean it and process it for you and send everything home to you. I don't think I will know how to act being treated like royalty.

yeah it will be a good time...and its a good time to go...it will be pretty country and everything is green because of all the rain. It won't be your most challenging hunt but it will be a damn good time.
