I know they recently had the admissions fudging scandal, but I'm beginning the process of exploring MBA programs and Tulane intrigues me. I have 3 years of work experience and would love to relocate to New Orleans and shift my career path.

Are employers now avoiding Tulane MBA grads due to the reputation hit? Are there any particular strengths of the business school? Does anyone here know much about the program?

Is the price worth the doors it may may or may not open for you? I would say no. Go if your employer pays for it

Seems to be a steep price when you combine tuition plus two years of lost earnings.

Others can jump in to correct me but I thought the conventional wisdom was a) go if somebody pays for it, like saderade said or b) go if it's a top 15 program. Preferably, c) both.

I agree to an extent and by no means plan on getting my MBA for the sake of getting an MBA. It will be on my own dime unfortunately and I think top 15 is possible, but unlikely. I would need to spend the next year finding ways to beef up my case for admission and really knock the GMAT out of the park.

Basically, I'd like to deviate from my current career path and will only go back to school if it truly will help open doors to a new avenue that is currently shut for me. I think there are worhty schools in the second tier that could open those doors for me - just not sure if Tulane really fits the bill.

The people at the Freeman school of business are good people. Law school or MBA shite costs money but in the end you can't have enough education. Good luck

Outside of the top 20 programs, most MBA programs are regional. The more well known schools in the region enjoy the best hiring numbers. While Tulane is a better school than LSU, the better grades likely do not trump LSU's name and reputation with employers, ie, more recruiters are likely to be LSU alums and fans than Tulane. That sort of thing seems petty but it's real.

I looked at both LSU and Tulane for my MBA and preferred LSU for the larger name recognition and the cost effectiveness. For an MBA program at least, I don't think Tulane is worth the cost.

Fwiw, I will (if everything turns out well) be graduating with my MBA this Saturday.

I want my MBA, but not from Tulane.

ETA: Freeman is a good school, but I need a change of scenery.

I'm talking regionally. In Louisiana and with companies that have major operations in Louisiana, an LSU MBA is not an unattractive option. Again, many recruiters and HR personnel are likely to come from or have attachments to LSU so that sort of thing helps.

I'm not a big fan of US News rankings but decided to take a look. According to their MBA Program Rankings:

LSU Ourso #61

Going into the numbers in your link, a higher percentage of LSU MBAs are employed at graduation than Tulane MBAs but the average starting salary for LSU grads is significantly lower.

Still though, the rankings are a good place to start and show that the difference is less than OP may realize. Comparing LSU and Tulane for an MBA program is different than comparing them as an undergraduate institution. Again, I think Tulane is not worth the price considering what LSU has to offer.

Can you be more specific? What you want to do has a lot to do with where you need to go.

One ex-employee was found responsible for seriously altering their admission stats, including average GMAT score and acceptance rate. It was very significant and caused multiple publications to remove Freeman entirely from their rankings.

Here's an article: LINK

where to start!

I spent the last 3 years working on the Advisory side (mostly risk/control work) of a Big 4 accounting firm. I find myself totally disengaged with the day-to-day work and determined a long time ago that Accounting & Operations is not where I need to be and is totally unaligned with my personality and interests. I am considering a variety of different paths (some of them outside the business world).

But rather than turning this into my "quarter-life crisis" soapbox, let me simplify it by only listing options that might possibly be enhanced by going back to a masters program:

- Marketing/Ad/Creative Firms
- Healthcare Administration
- Healthcare Consulting
- Business Development
- Non-Profit Org or Consulting
- Entrepreneurship

I know that's all over the map and still vague, but I'm still in the beginning stages of trying to narrow down the possibilities and truly could see myself pursing one of the above options (in addition to several others not listed).

I need a restart button badly.

I have a Tulane MFin, not a Tulane MBA. I did take a lot of the same courses as the MBA's and knew a few grads from the 2012 and 2013 classes.

What kind of career path are you trying to break into? The Energy program is pretty strong and they have some solid connections, if that's what your interested in.
