Baby names: where's the line between creative and obnoxious?

Our boy is due in February and we've been set on a name for a while. It's not super common but it's ordinary enough to where he won't feel like an outcast because he has this odd name and the rest of his friends are called Brad. To me that's the most important thing. I think these parents that like to name their kids after states or moods get caught up in what they like but give no consideration to the fact that it's the kid that has to grow up with it.

I have a family member who just named her baby girl "Brynlee". I don't know if that's a common name over in Louisiana now, but that was just painful to hear.

How did you go about picking your kids names, and did you feel it was free reign to be creative, child's feelings be damned?

Downloaded an app. The wife and I each picked 3 and decided from there. I liked the app because you could search by country of origin and we wanted a French name for our daughter. It's a pretty unique name by nothing terribly crazy.

What I think is probably worse is the ordinary names with phonetic-abusing spelling.

Again, I have family who are major offenders.

You can be creative while sticking relatively close to the classics.

Brynlee will be sucking dick in 6th grade.

For one thing, no kid likes their name. If it's a popular name, they'll have six friends with the same one. If it's not a popular name, they'll wish they had a popular name. For my generation, the third generation kids with Americanized names wanted ethnic ones and the second generation kids with ethnic names Americanized them. So stop trying to pick a name that will please your kid and just make sure it can be spelled and pronounced easily.

And for those of you complaining about creativity, keep in mind, if our ancestors hadn't branched out a little in the names department, we'd be named Aethelred, Alys, and Ludvic.

It is not a common name, but it is still classic

So the first person who changed the spelling of her kids name from Alys to Alice was trash. Interesting.

Never said anything about pleasing the kid. But I'm not going to make him a target when he gets to school.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference. If you name your kid after a car, profession, or something ridiculous like...HaHa...it's trashy.

Pick names that have meaning.

Don't try to change to spelling to make it "unique". It doesn't make
you creative.

Speaking of unique

Brynlee is an abortion of a name, as are all these phonetically-correct but misspelled names. This new trend is mostly a Southern thing and reeks of white trash. It's no coincidence that these names are being given by less-educated parents.

The ironic thing is the parents naming their kids that shite are the same ones that mocked the ridiculous black names, like LaKeisha, growing up. They don't realize they are doing the exact same thing.

I know each era spawns it's own "common names", but I'm sure these people aren't the trend setters.
