And they pump music the entire time the opposing team is on the field. Is that common knowledge? Didn't realize that was legal.

it's not legal and i think was alluded to by tirico during the broacast that they were doing it, but I thought he meant it in a "they're so loud it's as if they're pumping in noise" type thing

I believe the nfl passed a rule that allowed pumping in noise a couple of years ago. I think it is limited on when it can be done.

I remember the Vikings doing this shite in the playoff game in 2001.

I can't find the exact rules but I think they can play "music" through the sound system until 20 seconds on the play clock.

This was instituted last season:
quote:

"The at-home experience has gotten better and cheaper, while the in-stadium experience feels like it hasn't," said Eric Grubman, the NFL's executive vice president of ventures and business operations. "That's a trend that we've got to do something about." In hopes that professional football can mimic the wild stadium atmosphere typical of college football games, the NFL says it has "liberalized" its restraints on crowd noise. Stadiums will now be free to rile up crowds with video displays, and public-address announcers will no longer be restrained from inciting racket when the opposing offense faces a crucial third down."

It isn't the reason they beat us or anything like that but I think it's funny that they set a noise record with the help of giant speakers blasting music.

How loud can a group of human beings be anyway? Seems that 138 decibels has to be on the verge or past it.

quote:

Even short term exposure can cause permanent damage - Loudest recommended exposure WITH hearing protection 140dB

I refuse to believe humans alone can make this much noise.

They scream at the same volume as everyone else. Stadium architecture is designed to keep the noise in and funnel it to field.

Wouldn't domes be ever worse though?

That is my thought as well. If a jet engine can make decibels as loud as a stadium of people, it would make no sense for ground crew to wear ear protection.

In fact if Saints go back to Seattle, I think the players should alert OSHA about the unsafe working conditions. Safety first, Roger.

I'm not an engineer, but I read something about stadium roof architecture. In arenas they install some kind of arc or something on the roof and that helps channel the sound to the floor rather than reverberating randomly around the roof. IDK just something I read.

I've read all about that also. But its probably just bullshite and cover for them pumping sound in. Its just unfathomable to me that humans can be louder than a jet engine. And if it was possible, I'd think most European soccer stadiums would be much louder.

I have felt my ear drums pulsate a handful of times over the last decade in the dome. Supposedly the dome has "only" gotten to about 120db and that shite is loud (if those moments I recall are the measured readings that have been reported). The change from 120 up to 135+ would be exponentially louder, so either the 120 that they have measured at the dome is understated or something fishy is going on in Seattle and Kansas City. No way they can be THAT much louder than inside the dome.

I was there and they play music until the 15-20 second mark.

It kept the crowd in it the entire game and added to the experience.

Their Gameday production team is far superior

It was the loudest sporting event I've ever attended. My ears were hurting.

I went in thinking like you did. It isn't close, they are much much louder.

Their roof is very low too

Thanks for the post.... I was curious about a first hand experience. It seemed loud just watching. Pumping speaker noises and all that bs still isn't any excuse for the way we played.

Guess the dome needs to step up its game

Keep in mind, there is all kinds of monkey business you can do with a dB meter. How close you are to the sound source, will impact the reading. A dB meter placed RIGHT NEXT to the crowd and/or speakers playing blaring music, will be MUCH louder than the same meter, same sound, but down on the sideline or a few dozen yards away. That is what I'd imagine they are doing, that's what I'd do if I wanted to set a decibel record like that.

You can make an average decent-size electric guitar amp give a reading like 90, 100, 110 dB, and it's loud, but the meter is right in front of the speaker cone gettingn blasted, inches away. That doesn't mean you're the Who. Farther away from the speaker, in the venue, it's maybe 60 or 70 dB at most. You can technically say that the guitar is as loud as a jet airplane, but when you hear it, it really isn't. (Unless you are right up in the cone of the speaker, which would not be a good idea.)
