And to show that they mean business, the military promptly handed down 11-year prison sentences to a group of women and girl protesters.

quote:

Egyptian authorities on Wednesday took a heavy hand against both Islamist and secular opponents, handing down heavy prison sentences to a group of female supporters of the ousted Islamist president — including teenagers as young as 15 — and ordering the detention of two dozen secular activists, all for participating in protests.

The moves mark what critics say is a bolder determination by Egypt's military-backed government to silence dissent, continuing a crackdown on Islamists since the military's July 3 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi, while suppressing secular activists who supported his removal but also accuse the new leadership of restoring a system as autocratic as Morsi's toppled predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

Images from the courtroom in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria showed the 21 young female defendants in white head scarves and white prison uniforms, handcuffed in the defendants cage. Among them were seven teenagers aged 15 and 16, who were sentenced to prison terms until they turn 18. The rest — most aged 18 to 22 — were sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Why shouldn't I care about a part of the world that has been our biggest foreign policy headache for decades, especially since the Soviet Union collapsed?

Yes, life isn't always fair. This is why if you're going to pick a fight with your government you'd better be sure you won't get thrown in jail *before* you start.

Egypt has not been a part of what you describe nor for that fact Libya. Both of those nations have risen to panic mode in the last three years.

If this was the Islamist throwing Christian protesters in jail this board would be enraged.

Hypocrites.

Brutal. That whole situation was one giant nightmare. There are no good guys in that scenario, at least as far as the people of Egypt are concerned. I'm not sure there's a good guy vis a vis our national interests either. As bad as the orignal govt was, and they were very bad IMO, any time the military steps in things go from bad to worse. That's what we're seeing now.

What really is funny is the fact that they are getting thrown in jail for doing something that they would deny others the right to do. For that reason and only that reason I feel nothing but contempt for them. I hope they round up the entire muslim brotherhood.

What the hell are you talking about? Not only did the Brotherhood allow protests, but under their reign, Egypt had the most free press in the nation's history. Since Morsi was overthrown, all the independent TV stations and newspapers that sprung up during the Arab Spring have been banned. Of course it can be argued that the Brotherhood ignored the demands of its protesters, but there's no doubt that they allowed them.

You are full of shite trackie, you know what Morsi was attempting to do. The military stepped in and stopped him. The muslims do not have a track record of tolerance, you know this. To act any different is dishonest. The muslim brotherhood is a terrorist organization and deserve all the grief they get.
