NFL Downfield passing stats...Geno chucks it with the best of them

I know this is from Saturday, but I hadn't seen it posted here (searched I swear!): LINK
Data is from 2008 to now. Granted his sample size is smaller, but Geno is chucking it downfield at a rate among the highest in the league (6th overall),
His downfield accuracy (as measured by PFF's accuracy* figure) ranks 4th overall
Like Smith, Wilson and Kaep's sample sizes are smaller compared to the majority of the list, but it is interesting to see where they are ranked compared to Luck.
Obligatory LOL at Joe Flacco.

we’ve accounted for a set of factors that help better define a quarterback’s performance on passes that were actually aimed at (and delivered to) a targeted receiver. We add back in dropped passes to give the QB credit for getting the ball to its destination and take away ‘attempts’ that were actually throwaways, spikes, or balls that were batted at the line and those that fluttered from his hand when hit as he threw

So Russell Wilson throws the second most, and is the overall most accurate? That's a good combination to have..

So it's pretty obvious that the only reason why Wilson, Kaep, and Smith are in the top 4 is cuz they just started playing.
Especially considering how terrible Kaep has been this season.
Damn Drew Brees is amazing

This was my initial thought as well, but Manuel and Luck both have high downfield rates with not-so-stellar accuracy ratings.

So he's been a great downfield passer so far and is still the worst starting QB in the league. Has to be real encouraging for the Jets.

Eli is better then Peyton TIFWIW

I don't think the small sample size affects much. Referring to Kaepernicus specifically, when he pulls the trigger on the deep ball it is usually on target to open receivers. It is his general decision making and sub-20 yard throws have been responsible for this year's relative suck fest.
There are a lot of variables outside of the QB's control that go into how many deep balls are thrown and caught. Of the Top 10 in accuracy, only #3 and #5 are players I would consider consistently stellar with the deep ball.

That just means they are better than Manuel and Luck.
You have a younger QB with a younger arm that has only played for a year and a year and a half, it seems like common sense would dictate they throw it deep further and it isnt surprising that they are more accurate.
Its amazing that Brees is the best with a surgically repaired shoulder.
I think this graphic shows best the benefit of younger arms for throwing deep.

quote:Agreed. He chunks it to Davis pretty well. I honestly think his biggest problem is his decision making in the pocket. He looks like if his initial target isn't there he starts to scramble immediately and takes away half the field away

geno's arm strength and accuracy have never really been a question. Its his clock knowing when to get rid of the ball and his pouting like a bitch when things go wrong which can be an issue.

Not that surprising. That's all he did at WV was chuck it deep.

But Jaws told me Matty Ice throws one of the best deep balls in the league?

Jaws also called Kaep the GOAT

Think about this:
Wilson, Kaep, and Smith all play in run first offenses, so their deep throws are usually off play action and with a WR in single coverage.
Brees plays in a pass first offense--though a lot of his deep throws come from play action--which means that teams are scheming against the deep ball anyway. To be that successful despite that is pretty damned awesome.

Hopefully people will quit calling Brady a great deep thrower.
