Brandon Browner has a good shot at winning his appeal

Sounds like this is the story behind it and why it hasn't been made official (it's still in the process of being appealed).

tl;dr version
-The NFL has 3 stages for substance abuse violators.
-Stage 1: Browner failed a test back in 2005/2006 which got him fined
-Stage 2: Browner got cut and joined the CFL from 2007-2010. The NFL is saying that he got bumped to Stage 3 for missing NFL drug tests while he was in the CFL.
-Stage 3: Browner fails his 2nd drug test and is punished as a Stage 3 offender instead of Stage 2 and is suspended for a year.
On one hand, that is an incredibly stupid rule that the NFL has in place and he should probably win his appeal. On the other hand, he's an idiot for putting himself in this situation and it will likely cost him millions in free agency.

IN SUMMARY
Browner has not been suspended. He is waiting for the outcome of his appeal, with the hope that either his suspension is completely lifted or it is a four-game duration that could be served while he is injured the next four games. His defense is that he is being unfairly disciplined as a STAGE 3 offender due to missed NFL tests while he was in the CFL.

Contrary to what everyone is saying about PED test failures (those were last year), the two failures this year were substance abuse. The rumor is that they like their weed.

Regardless to whether it is a stupid rule or not, it is the rule and the NFLPA signed off on it.
I agree that it is unfair for the player in that it punishes a missed test the same as a positive test.
I am sure the rule is in place to prevent players from bailing out on potential drug tests by going to the CFL.

So the guy is a habitual offender, but will get off on a technicality? Seems legit.

Now I just read that John Clayton is saying that he has never failed an NFL drug test before, this was his first one. He got placed into Stage 1 when he entered the league because "when Browner signed with Denver as an undrafted rookie in 2005, he came in with some substance-abuse questions and was placed in the program for testing and/or treatment."
If true, he really did get shafted. First failed drug test and being suspended for an entire year just as you're about to be a free agent. That goes without saying that he could have avoided all of this in the first place.

Well if this is true, then I recant calling him a habitual offender. They are all on something up there though, id like for it to come out what.

not a good place to sign with if you have a weed problem

He got caught twice, that is enough to be banned for a year.

Twice is an 8 game ban, not a year. This is way overboard.

Give me a tPOS over a cheating bitch any day. Top down one of the most classless organizations in sports. Russell Wilson is the only outlier.

I see a 49er fan finally made a grand entrance into the thread

And it might have actually only been his first time if John Clayton is correct.

Imagine how awesome this board could be if the Falcons were good this year.
Imagine an NFC final four with the Seahawks, 49ers, Saints, and Falcons.
Imagine a Thunder Dome thread with the fans of those four teams...
