Trade gordon for some inside presence & stop the experiment

Pels and heat, the 2 elite teams that don't need big men...

Gordon:
It didn't take long for me to get back to despising gordon.

After re-watching this spurs game, a lot of Jrue and Reke's missed shots were from tipping offensive rebounds. They both had 4 O boards and 9 total. They were going all out knowing this was a big game.

Gordon didn't seem to give a shite. He was giving minimal effort on perimeter defense, he couldn't run the fast break without getting blocked or missing shots, he couldn't create anything, had 0 boards, and just didn't show up. Monty benched him, giving him only 19 minutes in his 2-9 FG, 2 assist, 4 turnover night. The 15 million dollar man was missing open shots all night...

I've become very impressed with reke lately. He's looking FAST compared to the beginning of the season and he can actually create and finish up near the rim. Gordon on the other hand looks like he has lost a step. As Jrue and Reke have learned to play with each other, they are looking like better backcourt players than EG. So, what's the point of having EG around?

Lack of paint presence:

Today, all SA had to do was cutoff the driving lanes with their bigs and play decent perimeter defense, we were limited to midrange shots again. Their bigs could push us out of the paint because AD, Smith, and ryno don't play in the paint. I'm going to be ill if i have to watch reke and jrue scrap for rebounds all game against tiago splitter.

Most basketball plays i know start with a big man in the post. AD cannot post people up and he should be running the fast break and not getting beat up from fighting over loose defensive rebounds anyway.

SA ran circles in the paint around our C when they weren't hitting 3s. They shot 16 less shots than us, but were just raining in the paint. Get a big guy that Jrue and Reke can dump off to when the opposing C jumps to contest.

The pels don't have anyone strong enough to stay in the paint and dunk in traffic and it's pissing me off. It's necessary. Bledsoe wouldn't be able to get layups all game if asik was always in the paint on defense. Having a big C behind everyone can erase so many mistakes.

AD is not ready to play C and ryno is best alternating between the 3 and 4 imo. They're both kind of like oversized 3s. It's too hard to play perfect defense to the point where you don't need a big man behind you.

Solution:

These guards are not talented enough to play small ball. The trade off of having all stretch big men isn't worth it. There's no brute strength on this roster. Just being big and strong pressures opposing offenses and collapses opposing defenses. Go big pelicans.

Cut off the redundancy at guard with EG and go big for god's sake. The spurs posted us up today from positions 3 through 5.

Trade for someone like asik, please. This upside down roster is painful to watch. There's a reason bigs play in the paint, it's because they're big. Monty is not some damn savant. Get some semblance of a traditional roster and run some traditional post plays.

You do understand that we shot our worst as the pelicans in our history right?

If we beat the warriors, we have two more winnable games...gordon is an issue but it's not a lack of effort...I was in the building vs Cle..he played hard...but his fg% is tough to watch

Most of your post is dedicated to lack of a center with offensive skills and then you turn around and say you want Asik. Just sayin. Although I do think trading Gordon for other parts has always been the plan.

Asik is overpaid for a player that hardly plays offense

Do we really want Tyreke as our starting 2 guard. That just seems like it could be bad. Gordon, at the very least, can catch and shoot when he isn't handling the ball.

It's Tyreke + Gordon in current roles (presumably) vs Tyreke and what Gordon would fetch, and we are not sure how that would affect the rotation. Tyreke may remain sixth man / closer.

Comparing those two directly is only part of the analysis, at best.

Well the op title is about gaining inside presence. Gordon alone is going to get us a mediocre/decent big or a mediocre/decent guard, not both.

I'm iffy on it myself, if Tyreke is your SG he actually becomes much like your PG with Jrue playing off ball and your SF spotting up which means not Aminu.

But this has always seemed more like asset acquisition than following a blueprint on team building. And I don't want to rehash all the Gordon doesn't want to be here mess, but it just doesn't feel like the team has ever embraced or supported him like they should embrace your highest paid long term piece. I think they acquired Tyreke and felt if the 3 guard experiment worked then great, if not then you have a clear path away from Gordon. It's ok to pay 1 6th man $10 million, but you don't pay 2 6th men $10 million, especially with highly paid starters ahead of one of them.

Well, then we have to talk about better inside presence and a more ball dominate 2 vs what we have.

Simply saying Tyreke might be worse than Gordon is empty.

Also, Tyreke for 65ish games (historical) compared to Gordon for who knows many in itself is a discussion even without factoring a big man's availability.

I'm not talking production in a vacuum, Tyreke simply can't play off the ball and if he's starting, the bulk of his minutes will be doing just that with Jrue running point.

Tyreke throws up way too many bricks to be a starter at the 2, unfortunately. Watching he and Jrue building houses from 8 feet was painful last night.

It's an asset that allows you to get worse by moving a better player than said asset. I just don't see any way we don't get worse by moving Gordon.

And maybe Gordon's the one they keep, but like I said it's just never felt like the team has fully embraced him, so if I had to pick a guy as the most available for the right price, I think it'd be Gordon.
