Can someone explain the difference in focus between VDIGX and VDIAX?

Both seem to focus on "companies who are committed and capable of growing their dividend over time."

One has a G and the other has an A. 
More seriously, the fund websites indicate that G tries to invest in specific stocks and A tracks a benchmark. Predictably, A's expense ratio is lower. 5 year performance is nearly identical.
