I have browning a bolt 7 mag. I don't know barrel twist off hand. I believe it's 26" barrel. Bps only has 175 and 140 grain.

Sell the 7 mag and get a 300. Shoot 168 grain HSM Bergers out of said 300.

I'll get 300 eventually, but right now sticking with my 7 mag

Also, sell the browning and get a model 70

Mine shots the 165's better than the 140's, if you have time buy both and see which do better for your gun, both will phuck up a deer

I used to own a 7 mag and can say that's the only gun I've ever sold. I hit numerous deer with it and didn't have much luck with recoveries.
I can shoot a wart off of a gnat's arse with my 270 or alt six projecting Core Lokt's and never had a tracking issue.

I've seen more deer run LONG distances after being shot with a 7 mag than a .243.

Hunting deer I decided to wait and I'll pick some up later in the week. I may look for some 165 grain. What's yalls opinions on core lockt versus ballistic tip?

Core lokt is the tits. Hands down, bar none. You can also purchase then anywhere they sell ammo. I've killed many a deer with Remington Core Lokt's. Folks used to call me late in the season to bring my 742 auto repeater with see through sights and said Core Lokt's to cash in on their DMAP tags.

I shoot the Hornady 154gr SSTs... dropped a good many deer in their tracks... trailed a couple too... one was trotting and I didn't make a good shot but still got her

I shoot 150 grain core lokts in my 7mag. I've haven't had a deer run over 30 yards since I purchased it in 2005.

When I rifle hunted I used 180 gr ballistics. I've never had to track a deer that I shot with my 7mag.

Either you hang with a bunch that can't hit a bulls arse with a bass fiddle, or you haven't seen many deer?

For whitetails, 165 in the 7mm Magnum is too heavy.
Step it down to 150 or lower and you won't regret it.
If it were me, I'd use a 130. But if you can't find that, or don't reload, then I'd go 140 in something that is not designed for 'penetration'. Whitetails are thin skinned and have a small cross section. You want that bullet fully mushroomed in about 3-5 inches at the most. So soft tips, or something that can do similar are necessary.
For a hunting round in most places, ballistic coefficient doesn't matter a whole lot. So longer bullets are irrelevant as long as you can get a two inch or so group at 200 yards or less. Four inches for a hunting rifle at 200 isn't a negative as long as terminal ballistics are really serious.
Heavier bullets just knock holes in whitetails and you end up trailing wounded deer that you may or may not get. Deer who's guts turn to goo on the other hand don't go far.

Back in the day when I deer hunted I shot a Winchester 264 mag. At that time u had 2 choices 110 grn & 140 I shot 140
Never ever lost a deer, when my buddies heard my gun they called it the cannon.
I split my forehead open a couple of times, that sumbitch kicked

Went find a deer last night shot with a .30-06 coreloct at 60 ish yards. Hit right behind the shoulder and bullet under the hide on the other side, as usual.
coreloct=junk

According to one man on here, that's good, because he says he doesn't want the bullet to exit.
I like blood trails. I had a fellow bring a deer by earlier this week, shot with a 30-06 with Remington Whitetail Pro (or something like that) 150gr. The bullet broke into about 8 pieces after hitting a rib. Was a mess. I'd never recommend those. I've shot core-locts on and off for 30 years, and cannot make a specific complaint about them. I've shot deer with every bullet you can find, and sometimes they all just do strange things.
