I don't understand quarterman over hickey.

I'm sure he'll be a nice pg one day, but hickey seems to be way ahead of him. Hickey in the doghouse again?

Was wondering why myself. It was my first time seeing him play and just figured his shot was off for the night.

I brought this up in the pregame thread against NWST.
Hickey is clearly the better player right now. HAS to be disciplinary reason why Quarterman is getting the start. Only thing that really makes sense.

Q started over Hickey but only played 11 minutes

If I remember correctly I heard it on the radio. Maybe it was Hannigriff and those guys on ESPN or Muscona I can't remember which show. They were saying it was a disciplinary issue with Hickey. Nothing major just team rules related maybe a classroom attendance issue or being on time, etc.

I think its a ploy to get quartermans confidence up and perhaps push hickey even more to get over his problems.

Johnny jones always keeps one of his best players on the bench, to keep as a sub to run with the second squad who can score. Supposedly he did this at North Texas also.
Last year we did it with coleman mostly, and sometimes carmouche.
Looks like we are using Hickey that way so far this year. Its hard to argue with Coach Jones' acumen and strategy, but...... with Hickey though?
I think Hickey may be the only guy who can fill that role this year, but still. Hard to argue with Coach Jones though when we've been playing well. Hickey has been great so far.
Coach Jones is such a good college bball coach. Recruits great, and our system is really good.
Brady ball and T. Johnson's old school systems were hard to watch. Play defense and somebody make a friggin basket - still works if you have badass players, like Duke.
Hickey got in trouble last year too. Hope he stays in class, have seen him around the city randomly, he seems like a really nice dude.
In comparison, I've seen Jarvis Landry randomly a few times around BR, and he always has this look on his face of pure intensity, even in a friggin grocery store. Would not mess with that dude (he's little though but still!)

Maybe to limit his and stringer playing at the same time due to both being under6

I think its a matchup thing.
Hickey still plays the majority of the minutes at pg, but it allows us to now start two sub 6 foot guards. Could be disciplinary, wouldn't surprise me, but isn't necessarily.

I heard it was disciplinary

I'm far more worried about who finishes the game and gets the major minutes. Hickey provides a nice spark off the bench and so far this season he seems comfortable with it. Clearly, Hickey is going to get the minutes.

I like the thought of Quarterman starting, and by tourney time he will be hard to handle, his length at the top of the defense should not be overlooked. That will come in handy when the Tigers meet up with the Kentuckys of the world. so i'm ok with Quarterman getting his minutes.

Quarterman started both games but Hickey played more minutes in both if I'm not mistaken.
Quarterman was getting a lot of positive pre-season hype, again some of it from Quarterman himself, and he seems to have a bit more of an adjustment to this level than he or others may have thought.
Here's my perception of the situation - I heard Jones in a pre-season interview laud the leadership of returning upperclassmen Coleman, JOB3 and Stringer. He left out one returning veteran upperclassman...Hickey.
My take on that was Hickey was maybe sulking a bit about losing some PT at point. Just speculation on my part but I think Johnny might be trying to deliver a message.

I think this is mainly right.
I've gone back & forth with this, and this just my opinion from observation and being around the team, but here's what I know and think:
1. Anthony was surprised and upset when Trent left. He recruited him and "was nice to me and kind to my family". I think Anthony was "nurtured" to some degree by Trent, as coaches' new recruits can be. He was never in trouble as a freshman.
2. JJ has a completely different personality with a different attitude. Personality clash.
3. Anthony is a disorganized kid, often late for stuff, etc. doesn't take care of his business. He gets disciplined by the coaches. They want him to mature.
4. Tim is JJ's recruit and I think JJ's treating him more or less like Trent did with Anthony as a freshman. Bringing him along and trying to boost his confidence, PLUS watch Hickey in action. Tim is young and new will look up to JJ more.
5.It's my opinion that they are pushing Anthony to mature. Coach Leonard told us that Anthony knows his new role, is on board with it and doing well. I'm sure that's true, but I'm also sure that Anthony doesn't like it. It's his chance to show coaches that he can suck it up and do this new job well, without sulking.
6. I saw a few practices before the season started. Tim & the other freshman played with JOB, Andre, and sometimes Shavon as the "1st team". Trying to get them up to speed with the plays and each other etc.
Anthony was given the task of teaching the offenses and defense to the "2nd string" - Shane, John, Darcy, the walk-ons with Malik and Keith Hornsby going between each team.
They scrimmaged against each other.
IMO the coaches gave him this role to see if he would mature - e.g. no complaining or sulking about not being with the 1st team.
He didn't look too happy at the 1st practice I saw, but at the last practice seemed to be having fun.
I hope he realizes that he was given a big responsibility to train the others, rather than a punishment.
He's also a great catalyst coming off the bench.
Embrace that role Anthony!

I agree with you Britgirl, and coach jones is looking long term. this is the first time in ages that LSU has had length (athletic) at every position. When nwst shot from the top it was more difficult because of Quarterman's length, if you were at the game their made 3's were from the corner. And once J Martin return those will be difficult shots for the opponents with his length also.

There's undeniable truth there Team. As good as Hickey and Stringer have been at times, there is just no getting around that having two guards as small as Hickey and Stringer on the court at the same time is not a recipe for sustained success against better teams.
We need to have Quarterman bridge that gap. Hopefully his play develops over time so that he can do so efficiently.

Any chance Hickey won't be eligible for Spring or in jeopardy due to grades? Just speculations.

Coaches like starting defense and having spark plugs come off the bench. I don't know how much longer it will last but it happens a lot just normally not at the point guard position. Like starting Aminu and having Evans come off bench for scoring. Or ginobili or thunder starting sefolosha and having harden come off bench for scoring. It balances the game to where you don't have too many highs and lows scoring wise.

Tiger-that is correct, i've coached AAU basketball for 15 years, and went to the State Final Four for 6 straight years because of the length of my teams. to beat the likes of Kentucky, Louisville, Duke, Michigan State, Kansas, you MUST have length on the perimeter and at the head of your press. I think Quarterman's value will be seen when coach Jones, turns him loose at the head of the press.
