statistically, if you're on the opponents side of the field, you should never punt.

i understand his statistics but what if it is 4th and 28 from their own 7. surely there are cases where the percentage play is to punt.

im pretty sure, he's fine going for it knowing there is a 95% chance the opponent scores anyway

This 4th and less than 10 or so anywhere on your opponents side of the field and punting should be off the table.

Take the safety and onside kick on the ensuing kickoff.

Its successful for this high school team, but I'm suspicious of it working at the highest level, with evenly matched teams where field position is so important.

I would do anything to see this in the NFL.

i'm not sure that would be statistically advantageous. I'd like to see the numbers though on that scenario.

Again since he's all about increasing his odds of winning i think punting on 4th and 28 from your own 7 is the correct call.

One day some lame duck coach is going to save his job doing it.

That man's name will be Rex Ryan.

he may say that punting from your own 7 will already give them good field position so it doesnt matter

or he could say that on 4th and 28, the other team would also play soft coverage and you may complete a 15 yard pass, thus it's basically a punt

id love to hear what his response would be though

No one will do it. The lame duck coach will get fired by halftime.

I wish I could be an nfl coach and asked to have a one-year guarantee and do this. It could only be done if the players believed in it as well.

right thats covered in the piece. if he goes for it and doesnt get it its a 92% chance they (opposition) score a td, if he punts its a 77% chance. difference of 15%. so he just goes for it because they convert half of their 4th downs. but not all 4th downs are created equally. 4th and 28 probably has like a 2% chance of converting, not 50%.

I guess there's no rule in high school about having more than 5 guys on one side of a kickoff formation.
