Did New Orleans ever come close to landing an MLB team in the past?

I find it somewhat surprising that the city has never had a team given how big it was (compared with other cities in the past) and how long MLB has been around. MLB first moved southward in 1961 when Houston got the Astros and the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966. New Orleans got the Saints in 1967 and the Jazz in 1974. Seems that it had to be under consideration for a baseball franchise at some point.

If New Orleans had a team way back then I'm sure there would be a big following still today, now no way.

Yeah, I wonder. LSU baseball has a consistently large following, but the sport is on a much smaller scale than MLB. And it's not like LSU baseball was always a juggernaut.

Baseball today is all about corporate sponsors buying the tix.

City is not nearly big enough. You need an urban area with at least a few millions

Superdome officials pursued negotiations with Oakland Athletics officials during the 1978–79 baseball off-season about moving the Athletics to the Superdome. The Athletics were unable to break their lease at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and remained in Oakland. Superdome officials met with the Pittsburgh Pirates in April 1981 about moving the club to New Orleans when the Pirates were unhappy with their lease at Three Rivers Stadium.

No. In the 19th century New Orleans never had a team even in the NL or American Association.

It never had a federal league team. Not considered for the Continental Leauge

The Zephyrs do not even have 200 people on some nights come to their games.

This thread is about the past, though. The city wasn't big enough in 1970 when they had the Saints and were about to land the Jazz?

It's hard to draw 50k a game for 81+ games when only a million or so people live within 2 hours

Good stuff. Three Rivers was a dump and the Pirates didn't get a new stadium until 20 years later. I guess Three Rivers was upgraded enough to placate the organization. Hard to imagine them moving just a couple years after winning a WS.

Old Pelican Stadium would draw 15-20k, but they never really came close to getting a big league team.

No mlb team is drawing 50K. The Rays are last with 18,645 a game, Dodgers got 46,216.

Average MLB attendance for 2013
