Pow pow gave me his Thompson .50 cal muzzleloader before he died. I've killed one deer with it before. But only with the round ball bullet.

What other type of bullet can I use?

Round balls work fine but other options include maxi balls, and sabots with a .44 bullet (hollow point, bonded bullet, etc)

The deer I killed had to be shot 4 times with a round ball. I broke the ramrod on the 4th loading.

Always thought after that perhaps I need something with better expansion.

TC maxiball is the shite. They shoot well and with a 90gr charge will roll a deer out to about 120-130 yards.

Stay away from powerbelts. They suck arse.

The eight-point I killed with one last year would disagree if he could.

I have an old 54 Cal. Plains Rifle. It loves patch and ball.

I have a TC Hawken .50 cal. I built from a kit in 1979. I have killed many deer with black powder (about 120 grains and a round ball with patch. I shot one buck at 80 yards and it went right thru his rib cage, with blood gushing out both sides. He ran about 50 yards. I love using that gun and am proud of the job I did on it. A lot of work goes into making one of those purdy!
Mrs. Couyon gave me a .50 cal. Encore about 7-8 years ago and i have killed several with it. I use that red sabot in the pic above with 2 pellets. Killed a doe at daylight Saturday at 75 yds with it

Im going to use the ole patch and ball on friday. I dont have enough experience to determine which is better(sabot vs ball) Ive shot at one doe with the round ball and killed her.

Will see what she does friday. Longest shot with open sights i will have will be around 50 yds.
